Happy Hour: Mayday! Mayday!

It’s Tuesday, May 1st. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Bar Great Harry (280 Smith St., at Sackett St., Carroll Gardens) hosts Allagash tonight, with a star-studded selection from the Maine-based purveyor of Belgian-style brews. Among the beers on tap: the 2011 Victoria and Confluence, the new Saison Mihm, Four, and much more! Plus, all the event beers will be just $5/pour from 6-10pm.

  • Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) hosts Midnight Sun and Alesmith today starting at 4pm and running all night long. From Alesmith, they’ll have beers like the IPA and Nautical Nut Brown. From Midnight Sun, the Panty Peeler Tripel and Monk’s Mistress Special Dark Ale will be on tap.

  • Wheat Beers are the subject of this week’s free Tuesday Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm. You’ll get to sample several different brews made with wheat for free, with your host, Bierkraft’s own Matt Barclay.

  • Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) hosts Troegs tonight.  They’ll have four lines on, including the Hop Back Amber, Dreamweaver, and a beer from their Scratch Beer series… all at nice discounted prices! Grab a pint and enjoy starting at 6:30.

  • April Sours wraps up in May as tonight’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) celebrates sour beers! $10 gets you six tastings of beers like Mikkeller It’s Alright, Itchgems Grand Cru, and more. The tasting gets underway at 7:30pm.

Will the new tax on in-state brewers lead to price increases?

The fallout from last week’s news about increases in fees and excise taxes for New York breweries continues. Gothamist, the Wall Street Journal, Metro, and others have brought light to the change by the State Liquor Authority, which removed the waiver on label registration fees and beer excise taxes for small brewers, slapping a tax of $8.06 per barrel for beers brewed in New York state that are sold in New York City.

Happy Hour: Quack, Quack

It’s Monday, April 30th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) closes out April Sours Weekend with a duck dinner tonight at 7pm, featuring a family-style meal from Hudson Valley Duck Farm and beers from Jolly Pumpkin, Cantillon, Allagash, and more. Tickets are $45 and spots are still available for tonight by calling the restaurant at 212-982-3006.

  • It’s Troegs Pint Night at Valhalla (815 9th Ave., at 54th St., Hell’s Kitchen) tonight from 6-9pm, featuring great brews from Pennsylvania like Nugget Nectar and many, many more!

  • Brooklyn Brewery (79 N. 11th St., at Wythe Ave., Williamsburg) hosts a fundraiser with Environmental Advocates of New York, the Manhattan Young Democrats, and the New York Water Rangers called “Save Our Beer,” promoting awareness of the threat fracking poses to beer in New York State. The event has a $5 suggested donation and kicks off at 7:30pm.

Jimmy’s No. 43 is the place to get your Sour on this weekend.

Your friendly editor is going out of town this weekend, sampling the many great beers that Seattle, Washington has to offer. But that doesn’t mean we won’t still give you a rundown of the beer events happening here in New York City this weekend! What to do? Well, it’s April Sours Weekend at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village), for one. And there are some special guests in town from both Germany and Norway this weekend. Local breweries launch New York City Brewers Guild

A couple months back, we visited San Francisco for their annual San Francisco Beer Week, put on by the San Francisco Brewers Guild. The guild was comprised of brewers from San Francisco proper who featured some of their best beers in one big slate of beer events, including an opening night gala that featured the best beer from nearly every brewer in the Bay Area. Then we wondered, “why isn’t anyone doing that here?” Well, as of today, someone is: the New York City Brewers Guild launched this week, and even better, they’re kicking things off with a big party at Brooklyn Brewery on May 22nd.
