Schumer, state lawmakers push for tax relief for brewers

We know that Sen. Chuck Schumer is a fan of the craft beer industry. After all, he made a Super Bowl bet with other U.S. Senators that involved some pretty great local beer. And more importantly, he launched the I Love NY Brew campaign late last year to highlight beer made in New York State. But in the wake of the news that New York brewers will be facing higher taxes, he’s making it known that he’s on their side and well aware of the challenges that in-state breweries will face.

Your Beery Weekend: May 4-6

Ugh. Another “drinking holiday” falling on a Saturday this year? Tomorrow is Cinco De Mayo, and we recommend you adopt similar rules to the ones we suggested for St. Patrick’s Day. Another amateur hour with crappy beer. If you insist on drinking Mexican beer tomorrow, you might like to go for something a bit more on the crafty side, like Cucapa. In which case… by all means, enjoy!

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, May 3rd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York tonight:

  • A cool event tonight at Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) tonight, as they serve up a very special $10 tasting with the Bronx Brewery. Ten bucks gets you a pour of the Bronx Pale Ale, a pour of Woodford Reserve, a pour of the Barrel-Aged Bronx Ale Pale aged in Woodford Reserve barrels, and a serving of the Bronx Pale Ale jerky from Slantshack Jerky. Get there early! This one runs from 6-10pm.

  • It’s the monthly IPA Night at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight, with tons of IPAs on tap starting at 7pm. Don’t worry, be hoppy. They’ll have KelSo Industrial IPA, Ballast Point Sculpin, Flying Dog Snake Dog on cask, and many more!

  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) this week is the Haandbryggegriet Dobbel Dose, a double IPA straight outta Norway. Get this rare hop bomb starting at 5pm.

  • KelSo hosts a tasting tonight at Brooklyn Fare (200 Schermerhorn St., at Hoyt St., Downtown Brooklyn), pouring samples of their IPA and Recessionator at their growler station from 5-7pm.

  • The Brew York City Growler Bar @ 76th (2148 Broadway, at 76th St., Upper West Side) offers samples of the three new bottled varieties of Captain Lawrence today from 5-7pm. Try the Liquid Gold, Captain’s Kolsch, and Fresh Chester Pale Ale!

  • In Jersey, have some Oskar Blues at The Iron Monkey (97 Greene St., at York St., Jersey City, NJ) as they host the Colorado brewery starting at 6pm. Owner Dale Katechis will be on hand, along with the Mama’s Lil Yella, Gubna Imperial IPA, the 2010 Ten Fidy, and more on tap!

Happy Hour: Sippin’ on Sumpin'

It’s Wednesday, May 2nd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York tonight:

  • It’s “Cinco de Dos” at The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay), as they host Rogue and a bunch of brews from Oregon starting at 6pm. Enjoy the Old Crustacean, Brutal IPA, Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale, and a whole lot more on tap. Plus, they’ll serve up some free chicken tacos!

  • It’s “Sippin’ on Saison” Night at The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace). Starting at 7pm, they’ll be pouring six of their favorite saisons, including the Stillwater/Mikkeller Two Gypsies Our Side, Moinette Blonde, Hopfenstark Station 7, and more!

  • Troegs pays a visit to Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) for their weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. Enjoy beers like the Hopback Amber and the Troegnator Doppelbock! From 7-10pm, $10 gets you 2 full beers, a 3-beer tasting flight, a taste of whisky, and an order of tater tots!

  • The “Meet Your Maker” Tasting Series continues at 61 Local (61 Bergen St., at Smith St., Carroll Gardens) this month with KelSo Beer, Brooklyn Cured, and Brooklyn Brine Co. offering local beer, and locally-cured meats and pickled veggies. The makers of these products will be on hand, too! The full tasting is $35.

  • It’s Lagunitas Night at Top Hops Beer Shop (94 Orchard St., at Broome St., Lower East Side) tonight starting at 5pm. They’ll be tapping the Doppel Weizen, Pils, and A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’. No, I’m not keeping a secret… that’s the name of the beer, dummy.
