Happy Hour: A Three Ring Circus

It’s Wednesday, May 30th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s KelSo Night at The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay) starting at 6pm. Enjoy some small-batch surprises from the Brooklyn brewer, including a Rye-aged Industrial IPA, a Rye-aged Rauchbier, the Cabernet-Aged IPA dry hopped with Galaxy hops, and a cask of the IPA dry-hopped with Nelson Sauvin.

  • Speakeasy and Shmaltz head to the Upper West Side tonight to take the taps at George Keeley (485 Amsterdam Ave., at 83rd St., Upper West Side) starting at 6pm. They’ll be serving up the brand-new Speakeasy/Shmaltz/Ninkasi collaboration, Three Ring Circus, as well as the Hebrew Jewbelation Thirteen and Speakeasy Massacre wheatwine.

  • Top Hops (94 Orchard St., at Broome St., Lower East Side) hosts Founders tonight from 7-9pm, pouring their Centennial IPA, Founders Pale Ale, Red’s Rye, and Cerise.

  • The Growler Station (26 W. 8th St., at MacDougal St., Greenwich Village) hosts a Stillwater tasting tonight from 5-8pm, featuring some nice brews from gypsy brewer Brian Strumke, including the Our Side on tap, plus several more in bottles.

  • Full Sail pays a visit to Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) for their weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. From 7-10pm, $10 gets you 2 full beers and a 3-beer tasting flight from the Oregon brewery, plus a taste of whisky and an order of tater tots!

  • It’s a “Riverdance” at Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill) tonight starting at 6pm, as they pour beers from three river-inspired breweries: Riverhorse, Eel River, and Mad River. And, for the hell of it, they’ll have Irish music and dance, too!

A guide to flavorful, low calorie craft beer

image

This morning on NBC’s Today, Men’s Health editor and author of Eat This, Not That Dave Zinczenko seriously suggested the above: that in place of a flavorful craft beer, you should drink a Michelob Ultra Amber to save calories. Admittedly, he chose the “Amber” version of the infamously flavorless low-calorie beer brand from Anheuser-Busch because it was “slightly more flavorful” than its standard counterpart, but regardless, it’s not even close to a suitable replacement. Not only is it lacking in anything close to the flavor of a craft beer, it doesn’t even resemble the same style of beer they compared it to - the Goose Island IPA.

It’s as if Zinczenko has no idea why people drink craft beer. Most people drink craft beer because of the robust flavor and the variety of styles. Telling people to drink Michelob Ultra instead of an IPA is akin to telling them to choose a leaf of lettuce over a bacon double cheeseburger; sure, you’ll save calories, but you won’t derive any pleasure from the replacement.

image

This hot, sunny weather has us already yearning for the summer weekends when we can take advantage of it (or, at the very least, cool off with a cold beverage of the malted variety). And with the month of June kicking off on Friday, it’s a good time to remind you of some great events coming up on the weekends next month. Put these in your calendar now, and spare yourselves the boredom of repetitive barbeques and picnics in the park.

Your Beery Weekend: The 5 Boro PicNYC & Beer Here

image

There aren’t many beer events going on this weekend, on account of it being the first weekend when everyone heads out of town (heck, we’re headed out of town, too, to attend Hill Farmstead Brewery’s Second Anniversary Celebration in Vermont. But if you are staying in town, might we suggest the 5 Boro PicNYC on Governor’s Island or the Beer Here! event at the New-York Historical Society?
