Happy Hour: Have a beergasm

It’s Monday, June 4th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Head to One Mile House (10 Delancey St., at Bowery, Lower East Side) for Speakeasy Night starting at 7pm. Try the Double Daddy, White Lightning, Scarface Imperial Stout, and more!

  • Check out a Wheat Beer tasting from our friends at Beer Here and Now tonight at Winegasm (31-86 37th St., at Broadway, Astoria). $25 gets you a tasting of six beers, including Allagash White and Two Brothers Ebel Weisse, plus a plate of appropriately-paired wings and a special surprise! The tasting gets underway at 7pm.

  • Allagash hosts a beer pairing dinner tonight at Alobar (46-42 Vernon Blvd., at 47th Rd., Long Island City) from 5:30-10pm. $55 gets you five courses and five beers, like Lobster Poutine with their Tripel and BBQ-braised Wild Boar Tenderloin with Curieux. If you’re not interested in the whole dinner, flights of beer are available for just $15.

  • The Very Special Keg at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) tonight is straight out of Maine… the Maine Beer Company Peeper Ale. They’ll tap it at 5pm!

  • Perilla (9 Jones St., at W. 4th St., West Village) kicks off their weekly Monday Night Beer Dinners starting tonight. For the month of June, they’ll feature the beers of Evil Twin each Monday with a four-course tasting menu that includes Turkey Scrapple with the Mad Dog Pale Ale and Roasted Local Pork Loin with the Ron and the Beast Ryan saison. Dinner is $60 and served all night long starting at 5:30pm; reservations are recommended.

Your Beery Weekend: June 1-3

Today is the first day of meteorological summer. Apparently, all these years we’ve been saying that summer starts around Memorial Day. We’d always be corrected by some smartass, but it turns out we weren’t that far off after all. And with the arrival of summer comes some great outdoor beer events and lots of great, easy-drinking beer that’s best consumed on rooftops and patios. Might we suggest breaking open the last of your Sixpoint Apollo, or maybe a Blue Point Summer Ale in can? Hell, if it tastes good and it’s refreshing, drink it this weekend.

Bierkraft to brew beer in-house

If you’ve been to Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) recently, you may have noticed a massive space carved out of the entrance area that’s stocked with brewing equipment. It’s not for sale, and it’s not for decoration - the well-established beer shop will soon brewing its own beer. And it made their intentions known this week when they presented their application for a brewpub license to their Community Board on Wednesday night.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, May 31st. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Sixpoint pays a visit to Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge) tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll have tons of beer goodies, like 8 Days O’ Wheat, Otis stout on nitro, the Mad Scientist #8 Ich Bin Kein Berliner Weisse, and more!

  • It’s KelSo Night at Top Hops (94 Orchard St., at Broome St., Lower East Side) tonight at 7pm, as they pour the Rye-aged Industrial IPA, a Rye-aged Rauchbier, and the Cabernet-Aged IPA dry hopped with Galaxy hops.

  • Did someone say KBS? Founders pours its infamous Kentucky Breakfast Stout tonight at 6pm at House of Brews (302 W. 51st St., at 8th Ave., Hell’s Kitchen), along with their Double Trouble, Old Curmudgeon, and more!

  • The Three Ring Circus heads to Brooklyn as The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) hosts Shmaltz and Speakeasy and their collaboration beer with Ninkasi. They’ll also pour other beers from the breweries, including the Scarface Stout and Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner.

  • Celebrate the release of Pretty Things Field Mouse’s Farewell at Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave., at Franklin St., Greenpoint) tonight at 7pm. Jim Barnes will pour their seasonal saison, along with the Baby Tree quad as he spins some French disco.

  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) this week is the La Rulles Grande 10 from Brasserie Artisanale. It’s a little bit saison, a little bit tripel. Get there are 5pm to try this Belgian hybrid beer!

  • Albert Hall Tavern (508 9th Ave., at 39th St., Hell’s Kitchen) hosts an Abita tap takeover tonight starting at 5pm, pouring the Satsuma Harvest Wit, Jockamo IPA, Andygator, and more all night long!

  • The Brooklyn Historical Society (128 Pierrepont St., at Clinton St., Brooklyn Heights) hosts their first Beer Garden event of the year from 6-8pm, featuring live music from The Tres Amigos, pretzels from Sigmund’s, and beer from Brooklyn Brewery for five bucks.

What’s Brewing in Albany: Brewery tax credit clears first hurdle

With the legislative session in Albany ending in just three weeks, state legislators are making a push to pass a crucial tax credit for in-state brewers before they adjourn for 2012 as it cleared its first hurdle today in committee.

The tax credit - proposed in both Assembly and Senate bills - would allow breweries to credit back the New York State excise tax they were forced to pay after a court ruling earlier this year. In-state brewers had previously been exempt from the tax, which amounts to 14 cents per gallon. The added tax, which was implemented at the beginning of April, amounts to hundreds of thousands of dollars for the state’s largest craft breweries, and a burdensome amount for small breweries as well.
