Your Beery Weekend: June 15-17

image

This is the weekend you’ve all been waiting for: the Brooklyn Waterfront Beer Festival is Saturday, and the weather is shaping up to be great. We’re no meteorologists, but 76 degrees and sunny sounds just about perfect for drinking beer outside on the banks of the East River in Williamsburg. This is also probably one of the best beer lists ever assembled for an outdoor beer festival in New York. Sure, it’s not chock-full of barleywines and double IPAs and barrel-aged brews, but who wants to drink those in the summer? If this whole thing appeals to you, there are still tickets available for both the day and evening sessions tomorrow.

If this festival doesn’t appeal to you - or you’re someone who just likes to drink inside even on the most beautiful of days - there are plenty of other beer events this weekend in New York. Take a look at them all right here:

Details of Brewery Tax Credit deal emerge

We told you this morning that Governor Cuomo and State Senate and Assembly leadership had reached a deal to grant in-state breweries a tax credit to offset the excise taxes they are now forced to pay as a result of a court ruling back in March. In addition, we hinted that the deal also included the institution of a new Farm Brewery license. Now, the Governor’s office has released the details of the deal.

First Look at Malt & Mold

image

There have been a lot of gimmicks at new beer shops this year. From fancy counter-pressure fillers to clear plastic recyclable bottles to celebrity backers, it feels like the beer store trend is spiraling out of control. Sometimes, you just want a simple beer shop, and that’s what Malt & Mold (221 East Broadway, at Clinton St., Lower East Side) brings, with great beers and cheeses, and friendly staff without any unnecessary fancy technology.

AP: Tax credit, farm brewery deals imminent

The Associated Press reported last night that lawmakers in Albany have reached a deal on providing a tax credit for in-state breweries affected by a court ruling earlier this year that lifted their exemption from state excise taxes. In addition, the package of bills to support the industry includes the farm-brewery bill that Governor Cuomo pledged to support earlier this year.

The AP says the deal is imminent, with the bills expected to pass both houses by the end of the legislative session on June 21st. While Senate leaders had previously pledged their support for the tax credit, there was some skepticism in the Assembly, where Speaker Sheldon Silver suggested that a tax credit was not the route he preferred.

The same article also suggested that the deal would also legalize the sale of beer at farmers’ markets, however, that has been legal since 2009.

Unfortunately, reports of the deal make no note of the Brewer-Distributor Bill, which would relax draconian restrictions on when a brewery can choose a new distributor. Versions of that bill have been passed by both the Senate and Assembly this session.
