First Look at The Owl Farm

image

Does Park Slope really need another craft beer bar? After all, it’s already an embarrassment of riches with places like Bierkraft and Beer Table and The Gate. Maybe we’re just jealous that the neighborhood has such great beer bars already, but it’s got another one in The Owl Farm (297 9th St., at 5th Ave., Park Slope). This is one place we’re not skeptical of. It’s owned by the same folks who own nearby Brooklyn bars Mission Dolores and Bar Great Harry, so it’s got a good lineage. It’s got over two dozen taps, so it’s got a great selection. And it’s an overhaul of a former dive bar, so it’s got a divey feel… and in an age where chichi craft beer bars are opening left and right, it’s a welcome relief.

Your Beery Weekend: June 22-24

If you’re not going to The Festival this weekend up in Worcester, Massachusetts, you’re missing out. We called it one of the four best summer beer festivals, and the beer list proves it. We’re not scolding you for not going, because you still cango by hopping tomorrow’s bus trip arranged by Get Real and Alewife. The trip includes beer and food on the bus, admission to the festival, and an after party at Alewife. The bus leaves at 8am sharp! And you can use discount code “IWantBeer” to score $45 off the trip!

Okay, so you don’t want to make the trek all the way up to Worcester. Perhaps a trip a bit closer? Check our feature on quick getaways to breweries by train. From the Hudson Valley to Long Island, there’s some breweries that you may have never tried before that are a quick ride from the city.

Does that not appeal to you either? Fine, homebody… here’s a rundown of this weekend’s beer events:

Four breweries you can visit by train from New York

image

By now, you probably know about the city’s handful of breweries that are open to the public: there’s Brooklyn Brewery’s boisterous taproom on weekends, the rooftop at Birreria at Eataly, the low-key meals at the 508 Gastrobrewery, and the riverside vistas at Chelsea Brewing Company. But there’s a whole world of breweries just beyond the five boroughs that are easy to access by commuter rail and make ideal weekend day trips. Here’s four of our favorites, along with handy directions by train for a Saturday visit…
