Your Beery Weekend: June 29-July 1

It’s gonna be a hot one this weekend. Temperatures in the 90s definitely call for some (very cautious) outdoor drinking. Perhaps a visit to one of our favorite outdoor beer-drinking spots is in order? One of them, The Diamond (43 Franklin St., at Calyer St., Greenpoint), is celebrating its wooden anniversary this weekend with a four-day party in the bar and out in its backyard (pictured above). For those keeping score at home, the wooden anniversary is the fifth anniversary.

Just remember to stay hydrated, and watch the alcohol intake. Choose lower-alcohol sessionable beers over those big double IPAs and drink a water with every beer. Heat exhaustion is not fun, nor are day-long hangovers.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, June 28th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s the Colorado Shootout at Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge) tonight at 7pm. It’s a ol’ fashioned Old West duel between Left Hand and Oskar Blues with beers from both breweries on tap all night long! Try the Oskar Blues Gubna or the Left Hand 400-lb. Monkey IPA, among others.

  • Celebrate the Brooklyn invasion of Carton Brewing tonight at The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) starting at 7pm. Enjoy some great brews from the New Jersey brewery like Boat Beer, 077XX, Monkey Chased the Weasel, Red Rye Returning, and a special brew called #tresbrooklyn.

  • Shmaltz visits Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg) tonight starting at 7pm, with their assortment of Coney Island Lagers on tap all night long!

  • Brooklyn Ice House (318 Van Brunt St., at Pioneer St., Red Hook) hosts Sixpoint tonight starting at 5pm, pouring beers like the Signal, Resin, and the brand-new Mad Scientists #10 Spruce Tip Ale. The whole Sixpoint crew will be there, too!

  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) this week is Brasserie Dupont Speciale Belge. Get there are 5pm to try this great rare beer and enjoy some glassware giveaways!

  • It’s Sierra Nevada Night at Buddha Beer Bar (4497 Broadway, at 192nd St., Washington Heights) tonight from 6-9pm. They’ll have the Hoptimium, Kellerweiss, Ovilla Dubbel, and more, plus some brewery swag!

  • A $5 pint of a craft beer in Midtown? You can get one at St. Andrews (140 W. 46th St., between 6th & 7th Ave., Midtown) tonight from 6-8pm when it’s a Bronx Brewery Pale Ale!

  • It’s “Staff Picks Night” at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight starting at 7pm. Find out what your regular beer-pourers at the shop like best, as the staff chose 14 of their favorite kegs for tonight!

  • The Brooklyn Historical Society (128 Pierrepont St., at Clinton St., Brooklyn Heights) hosts their monthly Beer Garden event from 6-8pm, featuring live music from Alex Battles and The Whiskey Rebellion, pretzels from Sigmund’s, and beer from Brooklyn Brewery for five bucks.

  • It’s Allagash Black Night at Hop Devil Grill (129 St. Marks Pl., at Ave. A, East Village). Celebrate the Belgian Dark Ale with $4 pours from 7-8pm, and giveaways till 9pm!

Happy Hour: Brewnite at Brewnity!

It’s Wednesday, June 27th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s a celebration of homebrewing tonight at Brewnity: NYC Homebrewers United at the South Street Seaport Museum (12 Fulton St., at South St., South Street Seaport) from 6:30-8:30pm. The event celebrates the city’s rising homebrew talent with displays, demonstrations, and samples of homebrew… all while you enjoy the museum’s exhibits. Tickets are just $10 if you use the code “NYHG627” when you buy tickets online.

  • It’s Beer Geek Boner Night at The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace)! Starting at 7pm, they’ll tap four rare beers: the Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus, Hill Farmstead What Is Enlightenment?, the 2011 Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout, and the Alesmith IPA. Don’t pitch a tent.

  • It’s Smuttypalooza at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) today starting at 3pm, with great beers from New Hampshire’s Smuttynose on tap, including the Oak-Aged Robust Porter, the Brett & I, and the brand-new Rye IPA on cask, dry-hopped with Summit hops!

  • It’s San Diego Brewery Night at Top Hops (94 Orchard St., at Broome St., Lower East Side). Forget the cross-country flight; let San Diego come to you! All night long (till 10pm), enjoy beers from Ballast Point, Green Flash, and Mission.

  • Head to Staten Island for a Greenport Harbor tasting at Full Cup (388 Van Duzer St., at Beach St., Stapleton). The Richmond County Brew Club hosts the Long Island-based brewery as they pour Black Duck Porter, Citra IPA, and Harbor Ale at 8pm.

  • Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) celebrates American Belgian-style beers in their weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. Enjoy beers from Nebraska Brewing, Saint Somewhere, Allagash, and more! From 7-10pm, $10 gets you 2 full beers, a 3-beer tasting flight, a taste of whisky, and an order of tater tots!

  • Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) has a special tapping of the Southern Tier Oak-Aged Pumking to celebrate Emily’s last night as bartender there. The keg will be tapped at 6pm. Perhaps you’ll second-guess your vote in our Facebook poll today.

  • To kick off their Tenth Anniversary year, George Keeley (485 Amsterdam Ave., at 83rd St., Upper West Side) will pour their servers’ favorite beers tonight starting at 6pm! Enjoy selections from Alesmith, Green Flash, Oskar Blues, Two Brothers, Victory, and more… and maybe some special surprises to boot!

  • David Copperfield’s (1394 York Ave., at 74th St., Upper East Side) is in a New York State of Mind tonight starting at 6pm, with 15 different New York beers on tap, including selections from Southern Tier, Bronx Brewery, Captain Lawrence, and more starting at 7pm.

  • Veteran Astoria homebrewer and author Matt Schaefer returns to The Queens Kickshaw (40-17 Broadway, at 41st St., Astoria) to lead a new beer class tonight at 8pm. He’ll explore different beer styles and discuss the brewing process as you taste five different beers. Tickets are $20 for the event.

  • It’s Oskar Blues night at Mudville 9 (126 Chambers St., at W. Broadway, Tribeca) starting at 7pm. They’ll be pouring six different brews on tap, including the Mama’s Lil Yella, G’Knight, Deviant Dale’s, and more all night long!

Brownstone will be Sixpoint’s next canned beer (and there’s more Sixpoint news)

The Mad Scientists at Sixpoint have been hard at work crafting their next concoctions, but one of their long-time favorites is coming to their “nano-kegs” soon: their Brown Ale, Brownstone, will start appearing on shelves in early August. It’s their latest entry in their more take-home-friendly version of their previously-kegged beers, and it’s their third new release in cans this year. Resin and Apollo were also released for the first time this year in tallboys.

Happy Hour: Summertime and the drinking’s easy

It’s Tuesday, June 26th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Sixpoint visits The Brazen Head (228 Atlantic Ave., at Court St., Cobble Hill) tonight from 5-7pm, with $4.50 pints of five of their favorite local brews, including the Resin, Bengali Tiger, and the new Mad Scientists #10 Spruce Tip Ale!

  • Flying Dog will Occupy Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) today starting at 4pm. They’ll have twenty draft lines from the Maryland-based brewery, including the Wildeman Farmhouse IPA, El Dorado Single Hop IPA, Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout, and more!

  • Head to Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) for some Smuttynose tonight from 6:30-9:30pm. They’ll pour the Wunderbar Pilsner, Star Island Single, Big A IPA, and Wheat Wine… and offer discounts on pours and growlers all night long!

  • It’s the New York debut of Freigeist Bierkultur, a German brewer out of Cologne, tonight at Spuyten Duyvil (350 Metropolitan Ave., at Havermeyer St., Williamsburg). Starting at 6pm, they’ll pour their Ottokolong Kölsch, Pink Panther Hibiscus Wheat, Abraxxxas smoked Berliner Weisse, and more!

  • It’s the attack of the clones at Washington Commons (434 Park Pl., at Washington Ave., Prospect Heights)! The folks at Bitter & Esters homebrew shop in Brooklyn will show off the fruits of their “Brew Like a Pro” Series, where they brew clones of popular American craft beers. Tonight at 7pm, buy the original beer, Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye, and get a pour of the cloned beers for free! They’ll also be pouring the Rouge 66 from Sierra Nevada, bar owner Kirk Struble’s brew from the Beer Camp Series.

  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) celebrates the German beers! $10 gets you six tastings of beers, including Mahr’s Pilsner, Schlenkerla Oak Smoke and Professor Fritz Briem Gruit. The tasting gets underway at 7:30pm.

  • Summer Beers are the subject of this week’s free Tuesday Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm. You’ll get to sample several different seasonal beers that’ll quench your thirst, with your host, Bierkraft cellar manager Matt Barclay.

  • The Growler Station (26 W. 8th St., at MacDougal St., Greenwich Village) hosts a Shmaltz tasting tonight from 5-8pm, featuring the Coney Island brews Sword Swallower and Barrel-Aged Human Blockhead.
