What you missed on our summer vacation

We took a break through most of the second-half of July, and a few delicious pints of New York beer news happened while we were away (we’re not sure how you can measure beer news in pints, but in some universe, it mustbe possible). Here’s some of the news stories you missed while were were gone:

Your Beery Weekend: August 10-12

image

We’re finally back from our summer vacation! We hope the summer treated you well. Next week, we’ll catch you up on what happened while we were away. But there’s still plenty of summer left, and we’re here to guide you through the beer events and new bar openings that remain.

But before we do that, we’d just like to point out a little gem from yesterday’s New York Metro. As you know, we’re sticklers for the literal definition of the term “beer garden” and have been up in arms about the overuse of the term. So when we saw this headline yesterday, we expected the same list of outdoor beer spots that don’t qualify as “beer gardens.” But the article’s author, Jennifer Conrad, prefaced her entire list with this:

In the early 19th century, Bavarians fermented their beer in barrels in giant cellars. To keep those vats of liquid gold cold during the summer months, the cellars were covered with gravel and shady trees — and with the addition of a few benches, the grounds became the perfect spot to drink the libations that were brewed onsite. By those standards, none of the so-called beer gardens in the city really
qualifies. But since they’re one of the best places to while away a summer afternoon, we’re willing to bend the rules a little bit.

We consider this a huge step forward for beer-related service journalism. And while we personally think Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden (29-19 24th Ave., at 29th St., Astoria) qualifies as a beer garden by even our strict definition, it’s a sign that our message is finally getting through.

Anyway, whether you’re looking to drink beer at a faux beer garden or a nice little dive bar, here’s a rundown of this weekend’s beer events in New York City…
