Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, August 16th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Burp Castle (41 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) hosts Clay Gordon from The Chocolate Life. From 7-9pm, grab a beer and sample some chocolates to pair with your beer!

  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) this week is the Professor Fritz Briem 1809 Berliner Weisse. Get there at 5pm and try this rare keg of this sour beer! Later tonight, Jimmy’s hosts a Vegetarian Sour Beer pairing dinner at 7pm. Advance ticket sales have ended, but call Jimmy’s at 212-982-3006 to reserve any remaining spots.

  • Meanwhile, at Whole Foods Tribeca (270 Greenwich St., at Warren St., Tribeca), they’ll be pouring beers from Blue Point from 3-7pm. Get some samples and deals on their bottled beers and newly-canned brews like their White IPA.

  • Over in Jersey City, it’s “Meet the Brewery” Night at The Iron Monkey (97 Greene St., at York St., Jersey City) starting at 6pm, featuring Boulder Beer this week. Brewmaster David Zuckerman will be on hand as they pour the Bourbon-Aged Mojo Risin, Kinda Blue, Planet Porter, and more!

Is it pumpkin season yet? No.

It’s mid-August, and the temperature is expected to hit 90 degrees today. The summer is still upon us, beach days are still ahead of us, and pumpkin crop at our area farms is far from harvesting. But that hasn’t stopped some breweries from bringing pumpkin beers to our store shelves. Heck, some hit the road for shipments as early as July. But why is everyone rushing to put this style of beer on store shelves when nobody is in the mood to buy it yet? And for those who love this style, why is the early appearance a bad thing?

Happy Hour: From Belgium to Colorado

It’s Wednesday, August 15th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill) hosts Brewery Ommegang tonight from 7-10pm for their Summer Lovin’ Event. They’ll be pouring some great Belgian-style beers from the upstate brewery, plus Duvel, Chouffe, and Liefmans, too!

  • Beer Authority (300 W. 40th St., at 8th Ave., Hell’s Kitchen) hosts their first-ever beer event tonight with Boulder Beer. Starting at 5pm, brewmaster David Zuckerman will be on hand, as the bar pours ten beers on tap, along with the brand-new cans of their pale ale, Hoopla.

  • Speaking of Colorado breweries, Great Divide pays a visit to Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) for their weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. Celebrate Colorado beer! From 7-10pm, $10 gets you 2 full beers like the Hoss rye lager and Rumble IPA, a 3-beer tasting flight, a taste of whisky, and an order of tater tots!

Happy Hour: Relax, have a homebrew

It’s Tuesday, August 14th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Heartland Brewery Empire State Building (350 5th Ave., at 34th St., Midtown) hosts the brewery’s second annual Homebrew Contest tonight. $30 tickets through Brown Paper Tickets gets you access to beers from skilled homebrewers competing to make Heartland’s next offering, plus a selection of Heartland’s own beers, and some tasty hors d'oeuvres.

  • This week’s free Tuesday Night Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) features the new selections from the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp series! Starting at 7pm, sample the Floral IPA, Imperial Pilsner, Oatmeal Stout, and Imperial Red, all brewed by visitors to their brewery in Chico, California.

  • Dumont (432 Union Ave., at Devoe St., Williamsburg) hosts a summer beer dinner with Brooklyn Brewery tonight. $65 includes five courses alongside nine beers, including Yellowfin Tuna Tartare with BAMboozle, Crispy Berkshire Pork Belly with Sorachi Ace, and Almond Panna Cotta with Radius. Reservations are limited, so call 718-486-7717 now to reserve a spot!

  • Speaking of dinners, The Black Swan (1048 Bedford Ave., at Lafayette Ave., Bed-Stuy) hosts a four-course dinner menu paired with beers from Founders tonight at 8pm. The cost is $45, and you can call 718-783-4744 for reservations. If you’re not hungry, they’ll also be serving up $12 flights of beers from the famed Michigan brewery.

  • Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) throws a Belgian Beer Bash today starting at 4pm. Enjoy over a dozen different Belgian brews, including beers from La Trappe, St. Feuillien, and Urthel, all night long!

  • Knights of Bruklyn Homebrewers’ Sentry Competition returns tonight at Union Hall (702 Union St. at 5th Ave., Park Slope). Here’s another place where you can taste some of the city’s skilled homebrews and vote for your favorite as the people’s choice! They’ll also have free cheese from Stinky Bklyn. The sampling and judging get underway at 7pm.

  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) celebrates righteous beer dude Mike Lovullo’s collection of Sours! $10 gets you six tastings of beers, including Anchorage Tide and Its Takers, Jolly Pumpkin Maracaibo Especiale, and Liefmans Goudenband. The tasting gets underway at 7:30pm.

Happy Hour: Northern Vermont meets Staten Island

It’s Monday, August 13th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Get the good stuff from Hill Farmsteadtonight at Staten Island’s Adobe Blues (63 Lafayette Ave., at Fillmore St., New Brighton). Starting at 5pm, drink some great beers from the tiny Vermont brewery: the James black ale, the Edward pale ale, and the Society & Solitude #4 double IPA.

  • Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) taps their weekly Very Special Keg tonight at 5pm! This week, they’re tapping the Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, the super-hopped celebratory version of their classic West Coast IPA. Then, stay for the Sublimely Self-Righteous and the Cali-Belgique, also on tap tonight!
