First Look at The Malt House

image

The Village is filled with bars that pour lots of beer, and most of it is of the swill variety that college students shove down their throats in large quantities. “You could sell ice-cold horse piss in that part of town and still pay rent,” a local beer bartender joked to us recently. He’s probably not far off. That’s why we’re surprised - and relieved - to see a place like The Malt House (206 Thompson St., at Bleecker St., Greenwich Village) open without the college-bar antics, macro beers, and chintzy atmosphere that comes with most bars in the area around NYU.

Your Beery Weekend: August 24-26

image
The Barrier Brewing event at 61 Local this weekend won’t just include beer. This barrel will come in handy, too. (Photo via Twitter)

Summer is starting to wind down. Although if you looked at our local beer stores’ shelves, you’d think fall is into full swing. We’ve taken a stand against seasonal beer creep - the far-too-early arrival of seasonal beers - and so has Greenpoint Bar The Diamond (43 Franklin St., at Calyer St., Greenpoint) has taken a stand: they will not tap their keg of Southern Tier Pumking until the Autumnal Equinox. And we’re not talking just that day… the very hour and minute, too. On September 22nd at 10:49am, they’ll serve some breakfast (pancakes, cinnamon twists, and pumpkin pie) and tap a beloved fall seasonal beer… but not a minute sooner.

In the meantime, let’s keep summer going. Your list of beer events this weekend is after the jump…
