Happy Hour: Go to Beer Camp

It’s Wednesday, September 19th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village) hosts Sierra Nevada today starting at 3pm, with a great lineup of beers from the California brewers, including the Beer Camp Series, the 2010 Bigfoot Barleywine, a cask of the Best Bitter, and a whole lot of other surprises!
     
  • It’s the attack of the clones at Washington Commons (434 Park Pl., at Washington Ave., Prospect Heights)! The folks at Bitter & Esters homebrew shop in Brooklyn will show off the fruits of their “Brew Like a Pro” Series, where they brew clones of popular American craft beers. Tonight at 7pm, buy the original beer, Lagunitas Hop Stoopid, and get a pour of the cloned beers for free! 
     
  • Oktoberfest arrives early at City Swiggers (320 E. 86th St., at 2nd Ave., Upper East Side) tonight starting at 6pm as they host Erdinger and serve their Pikantus, Urweisse, Weissebier, and more!
     
  • Stone and Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) team up for the bar’s weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. From 7-10pm, $10 gets you 2 full beers (IPA and the 16th Anniversary Ale), a 3-beer tasting flight, a taste of whisky, and an order of tater tots!
     
  • George Keeley (485 Amsterdam Ave., at 83rd St., Upper West Side) continues their Oktoberfest celebration with Oktoberfest beers from Great Divide, Mission, Erdinger, Ayinger, and more, plus glass giveaways every night this week!

Construction is almost complete on the tents for Munich’s Oktoberfest celebration

We talked about some of the history of Oktoberfest earlier this week, and its roots in Germany. But let’s talk about what you can experience right here in New York. There are plenty of venues that will be pulling out all the stops to celebrate Oktoberfest… from a pop-up Oktoberfest Tent in Midtown to a cruise up the Hudson to an Oktoberfest celebration in the mountains. We’ve got a few of our favorites rounded up here, for your reference.

Happy Hour: A Tasty Tuesday

It’s Tuesday, September 18th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A) hosts Alesmith tonight starting at 6:30pm, pouring beers like the Nautical Nut Brown, IPA, andHorny Devil with discounts on pints and growlers all night long!
     
  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) celebrates harvest ales and more. $10 gets you six tastings of beers, including Bronx Rye Pale Ale, Two Brothers Bonfire, and White Birch Tavern Ale. The tasting gets underway at 7:30pm.
     
  • Avery takes over the taps at Mission Dolores (249 4th Ave., at Carroll St., Park Slope) starting at 7pm tonight. They’ll pour the White Rascal, IPA, and big beers like the Mephistopheles Stout and The Beast Grand Cru!
     
  • Both Ithaca and KelSo take the taps at Sunswick 35/35 (35-02 35th St., at 35th Ave., Astoria) tonight starting at 7pm. From Ithaca, they’ll pour the Outdoor Harvest Ale and Country Pumpkin, and from KelSo, the Kellerfest, Fuku, and more!
     
  • Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) hosts the newest entrant to the New York beer market: Michigan’s New Holland. Starting at 4pm, enjoy the Mad Hatter IPA, Golden Cap Saison, Dragon’s Milk, and lots more!
     
  • Enjoy some brews from Brooklyn Brewery tonight at Valhalla (815 9th Ave., at 54th St., Hell’s Kitchen) starting at 6pm. They’ll be pouring the Blast!, Sorachi Ace, Fiat Lux, and more!
     
  • Radegast Hall (113 N. 3rd St., at Berry St., Williamsburg) hosts an Oktoberfest beer tasting tonight at 7:30pm. They’ll be pouring the classic Schneider Weisse, Ayinger Oktoberfest, Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest, and more, along with live music from Tin Pan!

Happy Hour: Ride the Speedway

It’s Monday, September 17th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Alesmith Speedway Stout, an intense Imperial Stout from the famed California brewery.

  • Perilla (9 Jones St., at W. 4th St., West Village) continues their weekly Monday Night Beer Dinners, featuring Narragansett through the end of September with a four-course tasting menu that includes Fried Clams with the Cream Ale and Slow Poached Flaked Haddock with the Summer Ale. Dinner is $60 and served all night long starting at 5:30pm; reservations are recommended.

  • Also tonight, the Guilty Goose (131 W. 23rd St., at 6th Ave., Chelsea) hosts Allagash for a five course meal paired with the Maine brewery’s White, Black, Curieux, Confluence, and Victor. To make a reservation, call the Guilty Goose at (212) 255-3727.

  • It’s Oktoberfest Week here on the site, and they’re getting an early start at George Keeley (485 Amsterdam Ave., at 83rd St., Upper West Side). Starting tonight and running all week long, they celebrate Oktoberfest with Oktoberfest beers from Great Divide, Mission, Erdinger, Ayinger, and more, plus glass giveaways every night this week!

It’s Oktoberfest Week at Brew York!

Despite what you may think, the celebration that Germans call Oktoberfest actually begins in September. This year, the official Oktoberfest - held in Munich, Germany - kicks off on Saturday. To celebrate, we’re gearing up for local Oktoberfest celebrations and highlighting German beer all week long.

But first, a little more about the German tradition that has been the basis for many an American celebration.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, September 6th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Our monthly trivia night is tonight at 7:30pm at Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg). Enjoy some craft beer, answer some trivia questions, and win more beer! They’ll have lots of leftovers from last night’s Perennial Artisan Ales Night, too.

  • Founders Brewing comes to Mission Dolores (249 4th Ave., at Carroll St., Park Slope) starting at 7pm tonight. They’ll pour favorites like the Centennial IPA and Cerise for nice prices, along with special tappings of the Devil Dancer and Kentucky Breakfast Stout at 8pm and 9pm, respectively.

  • It’s McNeill’s Night tonight at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) starting at 4pm. Enjoy beers from Ray McNeill’s operation in Brattleboro, Vermont, like the Champ Ale APA, Slop Bucket Brown, Warlord Imperial IPA, and more.

  • Green Flash takes the taps at Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) tonight starting at 6pm, with the Retro Pale Ale, Hop Head Red, Double Stout, and more on tap, along with free pizza at 8pm!

  • It’s Sierra Nevada Night at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll pour beers from the brewery’s Beer Camp Series, like the Imperial Pilsner, Floral IPA, Imperial Red Ale, and more!

  • Join Dive Bar (732 Amsterdam Ave., at 96th St., Upper West Side) for a Rare Beer Night tonight at 7pm. They’ll have beers like Southern Tier Oak-Aged Pumking, St. Somewhere Pays du Soleil, Captain Lawrence Golden Delicious, and Cisco Lady of the Woods, along with even more rare goodies!

  • In the Bronx, enjoy $4 pints of the Bronx Brewery Pale Ale and specialty pizza pairings tonight at 7pm at coal-oven pizza joint Tosca Cafe (4038 E. Tremont Ave., at Miles Ave., Throgs Neck).
