Festival Season: Four New York Beer Fests this fall

image

As the weather cools off and we head into Fall, the beer festival scene is heating up in New York City with a slew of festivals in the next couple of months.

Leading off is the Second Annual Brooklyn Pour, being held on Saturday, October 6th in two sessions at Skylight One Hanson in Fort Greene (pictured above). Last year’s festival was a success, and this year is set to be even better. Among the most recent breweries to sign on to pour at the festival: newcomer to New York City Dark Horse Brewing, Milwaukee’s Lakefront Brewing, and Glens Falls’ Davidson Brothers. They join over sixty other breweries that are already on the roster.

Tickets are just $45 for General Admission, but you could win a pair of tickets to the Saturday afternoon session right here! Simply send an email with your name to brewyorknewyork[at]gmail.com and the subject line “Brooklyn Pour” by this Friday at 5pm and we’ll enter you into a random drawing to win a pair of tickets. We’ll also be giving away tickets via Twitter later this week, so follow us there for another chance to win!

After the jump, more beer festivals lined up for New York in October and November!

First Look at Rosamunde Sausage Grill

image

Beer drinkers in San Francisco have been familiar with Rosamunde Sausage Grill for years. They’re the neighbors of famed beer bar Toronado, and the sausage joint lets bar patrons carry their baskets of tubed meat on bread down the sidewalk back to the bar. It’s a pretty sweet deal - great craft beer and delicious sausage come together in sweet harmony. Another location in San Francisco’s Mission brings them together under one roof, with sausage and two dozen tap lines.

Well, that tradition has headed east in the form of Brooklyn’s first Rosamunde Sausage Grill (285 Bedford Ave., at S. 1st St., Williamsburg), where the food and craft beer are together under one roof, the sausages are just as delicious as their West Coast counterparts, and the beer flows like water.

Oktoberfest Week: the Five Best German Beer Bars in NYC

image
New Park Slope spot Die Koelner Bierhalle boasts a dizzying selection of German beers

Oktoberfest kicks off tomorrow in Munich, and New Yorkers are gearing up to drink their fair share of German beer, too. For many American beer drinkers, this is the only time each year that they give in to the temptation of German beers. That’s because there’s a common misconception that German beers lack the flavor and complexity of American craft beer. German beers are mainly brewed in accordance with the nation’s beer purity laws - which prohibit ingredients beyond water, malt, hops, and yeast. But despite this, there are plenty of flavorful German brews that will satisfy even the most snobbish American craft beer drinker.

Remember New York beer’s roots. While there was beer long before Germans started immigrating to the U.S. in large numbers, it was the explosion of the German population in New York that made Brooklyn the largest beer-producing city in America back in the late 19th century. And the numerous German beer gardens that once peppered The Bowery kept those breweries in business until Prohibition.

After a long hiatus, brewing of German beer styles like Kolsches, Weissebiers, and Marzens have been returned Stateside in the recent past thanks to American craft brewers. Local beers like Brooklyn Oktoberfest and Captain Lawrence Captain’s Kolsch have German roots, and they’re hugely popular around these parts. So why not try some of the originals? Here are some of the beer bars boasting New York’s largest selections of German beers.
