Brooklyn Brewery in final wave of Williamsburg expansion

An expansion two years in the making has finally come true, as Brooklyn Brewery is putting the final pieces in place to the last phase that will boost their production in Williamsburg to close to 100,000 barrels a year. This week, giant 200-barrel fermenters were hoisted into the brewery between North 11th and 12th Streets, putting the finishing touches on a plan to increase production at their home base significantly.

Happy Hour: Sans Poutine

It’s Tuesday, October 23rd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Quebecois brewers Hopfenstark visit Spuyten Duyvil (350 Metropolitan Ave., at Havermeyer St., Williamsburg) tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll be pouring brews like their End of the Trail Pale Ale, Saison Station 7, Kamarad Frederick Imperial Stout, and more!

  • Spring Lounge (48 Spring St., at Mulberry St., Little Italy) hosts Brooklyn Brewery tonight starting at 6pm. On tap, they’ll have the Defender, Fiat Lux, and Blast!, plus they’ll pull some stuff out they’ve been saving for a while, like the Mary’s Maple Porter. Plus, they’ll have free spicy Italian heroes.

  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) celebrates Pumpkin and Spiced Beers! $10 gets you six tastings of ciders, including Sixpoint Autumnation, The Bruery Autumn Maple, and Allagash Fluxus 2012. The tasting gets underway at 7:30pm.

  • This week’s free Tuesday Night Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) features beers from Flemish brewers Duvel Moortgat. From classics like Duvel and Maredsous to newer brews from Brasserie d'Achouffe and Ommegang, brand manager AJ Eckstein will guide you thorough their beer portfolio. The tasting kicks off at 7pm.

  • It’s Dog Fight Night at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) starting at 4pm today. Don’t worry - no dogs were harmed in the making of this event… it’s just a bunch of beers on tap from Flying Dog, BrewDog, Laughing Dog, Sea Dog, and Lagunitas.

  • Magic Hat pays a visit to Valhalla (815 9th Ave., at 54th St., Hell’s Kitchen) starting at 6pm. Grab some brews from Vermont like the Circus Boy, Hocus Pocus, Hex, and more!

Rockaway Brewing opens taproom

We’ve been tracking the progress of Rockaway Brewing since it first started sending their ESB to bars on Rockaway Beach over the summer. Folks who attended Brooklyn Pour earlier this month crowded around the Queens newcomer, whose well-crafted easy-drinking bitter is accompanied by some pretty slick branding, too. Now, you don’t have to go searching far and wide for their beer at bars around town… their growler annex at their Long Island City brewery officially opened for business last week.

Happy Hour: Happy Anniversary, Untappd!

It’s Monday, October 22nd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Our friends at the great beer app Untappd celebrate their second anniversary tonight at 7pm at The Pony Bar UES (1444 First Ave. at 75th St., Upper East Side). They’ll be there with free stickers and a chance to win one of five $20 Pony Bar gift cards! Check in to a beer (like the recently-tapped Sixpoint Autumnation or Ballast Point Sculpin IPA) at The Pony, and you’ll know instantly if you’ve won.

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Smuttynose Short Batch #17 Herbaceous, a wet-hopped beer that used 150 pounds of freshly-picked Citra hops flown in from the Pacific Northwest.

  • Perilla (9 Jones St., at W. 4th St., West Village) continues their Oktoberfest Monday Night Beer Dinners featuring Weihenstephan with a four-course tasting menu that includes bratwurst with the Vitus Weizenbock and German Chocolate Cake with the Dunkel. Dinner is $60 and served all night long starting at 5:30pm; reservations are recommended.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, October 18th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) celebrates its 8th Anniversary tonight, with free pizza starting at 4pm and a night-long lineup of amazing beers, including Avery Trogdor the Burninator, Founders Black Biscuit, and Rogue Fifteen Thousand Brew Ale.

  • It’s Dogfish Head Night at Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg) starting at 6pm. Get your hands on draft pours of 120 Minute IPA, Namaste, Burton Baton, Palo Santo Marron, and many more!

  • Brown Shugga, how come you taste so good? Lagunitas founder Tony Magee hits The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm to jam out on the patio as they pour the beloved (and missed) brown ale, along with Daytime IPA, Fusion IX, and more!

  • It’s Ballast Point Night at Spuyten Duyvil (350 Metropolitan Ave., at Havermeyer St., Williamsburg) tonight starting at 7pm. Enjoy some rare brewers from the San Diego brewers like Habanero Sculpin, Piper Down, and a Thai Chili Pepper Wahoo Wheat.

  • Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge) goes to the dogs starting at 7pm as they host Flying Dog. They’ll be pouring a lineup that includes The Fear Imperial Pumpkin, Gonzo Imperial Porter, and two beers from their Brewhouse Rarity Series. A portion of the proceeds from all Flying Dog sales and a raffle featuring beer and schwag will be donated to NYC Animal Care and Control.

  • ABC Beer Co. (96 Avenue C, at 6th St., East Village) has a Midwest Beer Tasting tonight from 6-9pm. Cut the jokes about their flat accents and enjoy their carbonated beers!

  • Chatham Brewing in the Catskills visits Dive 75 (101 W. 75th St., at Columbus Ave., Upper West Side) tonight at 7pm. They’ll pour the Dive Bar Unfilitered Amber Ale, plus their Hop Crop IPA, Scotch Ale, Oktoberfest, and more! It’s a rare lineup of these beers in the city!

  • Burp Castle (41 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) always shushes you, but tonight they’ll tell you to “Shut Your Trappe,” with three beers on tap from La Trappe: the Quad, Dubbel, and Witte. They’ll also have free frites starting at 7pm!
