Happy Hour: New York-New York

It’s Tuesday, November 13th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Competing New York breweries battle it out at The Owl Farm (297 9th St., at 5th Ave., Park Slope) tonight in their NY vs. NY Event. They’ll pit New York beers against each other in a variety of styles, including Rockaway ESB and Barrier Antagonist in the ESB category, Ommegang Scythe & Sickle vs. Southern Tier Harvest Ale in the fall seasonal category, and Ithaca Flower Power vs. Empire IPA in the IPA category. The beers go on at 2pm, and prices are discounted from 6-10pm.

  • Enjoy a Goose Island beer and cheese pairing tonight at Sunswick 35/35 (35-02 35th St., at 35th Ave., Astoria) starting at 7pm. They’ll be pouring the Bourbon County Stout, Matilda, Pere Jacques, and more on tap, along with cheese pairings from their neighbors down the street, Astoria Bier & Cheese.

  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) celebrates dark ales. $10 gets you six tastings of beers, including Nebraska Fathead Barleywine, Yeastie Boys Pot Kettle Black, and Hitachino Red, which is decidedly not dark, but no matter. The tasting gets underway at 7:30pm.

  • The subject of this week’s free Tuesday Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) is Wet-Hopped Beers. Join owner Ben Granger for a sampling of some of the best wet-hopped brews, and learn more about brewing with fresh hops. The tasting starts at 7pm.

  • Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) hosts the beers of importer Belukus Marketing tonight starting at 4pm, including the Belhaven Twisted Thistle, Malheur 12, Timmermans Framboise, Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, and more on tap all night long.

  • Out on Long Island, The Good Life (1039 Park Blvd., at Clark Blvd., Massapequa) will give every penny of every sale and tip to Sandy relief efforts starting at 6pm tonight, with donated kegs from several local brewers including Great South Bay.

Happy Hour: Break Open the Bottles

It’s Monday, November 12th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • The Three Monkeys (236 W. 54th St., at Broadway, Midtown) will host a Fundraiser for Sandy Victims on Monday from 4pm to close. • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Allagash Coffee Curieux, a barrel-aged favorite that’s just a taste of their Allagash Night this coming Wednesday.

Sandy: How you can help (and drink beer, too)

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, there’s been an outpouring of support for the victims of the storm, but there’s a lot more work to do. Manpower, supplies, and donations are going to be needed for the long run, as the recovery stretches into the weeks ahead.

Below, a rundown of all the ways that our local beer community is helping out in the wake of the storm. We’ll update this list constantly with every event we can - from food and clothing drive drop-offs to fundraisers. If you have an event or know of one worth listing, let us know by email at brewyorknewyork [at] gmail dot com.

New York breweries face damage after Sandy

Barrier Brewing in Oceanside was in shambles after the storm, as shown in this photo they posted to Facebook

[Updated Thursday, 3:00pm]

Reports are starting to come in about the damage from Hurricane Sandy to our area’s breweries. Unfortunately, they were not immune to damage from this storm, especially since many are in low-lying industrial areas. We’re still trying to gather more information from the most vulnerable breweries in the region, but in the meantime, here’s what we know.

Idle Hands open today for Red Cross benefit; other downtown bars reopening without power

image

This afternoon, Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) will be open, despite lacking power because of the massive blackout downtown. They may not have power, but they do have ice, and plenty of beer and bourbon. From 1-8pm today (or until they run out of ice), the subterranean bar will be open and lit with candles. And better yet, 50% of all the proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross. Drinking in the dark for a good cause!

Meanwhile, other downtown bars in the blackout zone will be open today, undaunted by the challenge of overcoming a power outage:

  • The 508 Gastrobrewery (508 Greenwich St., at Spring St., SoHo) is serving an abbreviated menu by candlelight all day today

  • Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) will be open from noon-5pm today with cold beer on ice

  • Randolph Beer (343 Broome St., at Bowery, Little Italy) will open at noon today, serving [as cold as possible] beer and firing up the charcoal to grill burgers

We urge you to support these businesses, as they’ve been without any business for three days. And that also means those bartenders have been without work, too, so please tip them well!
