Bridge and Tunnel Brewery quietly churns out Queens’ newest brews

In the span of just six months, three production breweries in Queens have gotten off the ground. The buzzed-about Rockaway Brewing in Long Island City opened over the summer, and the eagerly-awaited Singlecut Beersmiths in Astoria opens tomorrow. But a tiny one-man operation started churning out craft beer in Queens this year, too: Bridge and Tunnel Brewery is brewing beer in Maspeth. It’s a true nanobrewery, and its beer has started to pop up around town. In fact, you’ll be able to find the brewery’s newest beer on cask in Williamsburg this weekend.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, December 6th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Lagunitas Night at The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) starts at 7pm. They’ll pour some pretty great brews, like the Brown Shugga, a 2011 vintage Undercover Investigation Shutdown, the 2012 Wet Hop, and many more of the brewery’s greatest hits and rarities… plus a stoner rock soundtrack!

  • Head to Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge) as they host Firestone Walker starting at 7pm. They’ll have a stellar lineup on tap, including the Double DBA, Parabola, Wookey Jack, and more!

  • It’s Adirondack Pub & Brewery Night at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll have a great lineup of beers that have never been seen in Brooklyn, including the Fiddlehead Wet Hop Pale Ale, Schwarzpils, a dry-hopped Iroquois IPA, and a cask of the Imperial Stout with vanilla.

  • Malt & Mold (221 East Broadway, at Clinton St., Lower East Side) hosts a free  tasting of cheese and beers from Samuel Adams from 5-8pm. Merry Mischief Gingerbread Stout, Old Kentucky Ale, the Third Voyage Imperial IPA, and more will be on tap along with cheese pairings.

  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) this week is the de Dolle Dolle Teve. Get there at 5pm and try this rare keg of this 10% ABV Belgian Tripel, whose name literally translates as “Mad Bitch!”

  • One Stop Beer Shop (134 Kingsland Ave., at Beadel St., Greenpoint) hosts a free Narragansett tasting tonight at 8pm. There’s more to ‘Gansett than just their Lager… come by to try some brews.

  • Barcade Jersey City (163 Newark Ave., at Erie St., Jersey City) hosts Flying Dog tonight at 7pm. Among the brews on tap: the Disobedience Dubbel, the K9 Cruiser Winter Warmer, In De Wildeman Farmhouse IPA, and some great Single Hop beers, too!

Happy Hour: Trivia Time

It’s Wednesday, December 5th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Our monthly Clues & Brews Trivia Night is tonight at 7:30pm at Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg). Enjoy some craft beer, answer some trivia questions, and win more beer! Winners of each trivia round get beer on the house… and there’s lots of great beer on tap to choose from, like the Oskar Blues Mama’s Lil Yella, Empire White Aphro, Sly Fox Christmas Ale, and more!

  • It’s Flight Night at Sycamore (1118 Cortelyou Rd., at Westminster Rd., Ditmas Park) as they host Green Flash tonight. Enjoy a flight of West Coast IPA, Cedar Plank Ale, Grand Cru, and Green Bullet until 10pm.

  • Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) taps the Stone Enjoy By 12.21.12 tonight at 6pm. Come by as early as you can for a neat pint glass & t-shirt combo!

  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) taps two beers tonight at 5pm from the only brewery in New York certified to sell their beer at NYC Greenmarkets - Tundra Brewery! They’ll pour the Red Ale and Brown Ale tonight, along with some tasty free Greenmarket pretzels!

  • It’s Bear Republic Night at Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill) starting at 7pm. Enjoy some great brews from California on tap!

Long Island brewers come together to support Barrier with Surge Protector IPA

There’s already been an outpouring of support for Barrier Brewing in Oceanside, which was severely damaged in Hurricane Sandy. First it was fundraising efforts, then generous brewers opening their doors to the brewers. But it keeps getting better for the two-man operation - eight Long Island breweries came together yesterday to brew their “Sandy Relief Beer” called Surge Protector IPA.

Happy Hour: Drink For Good

It’s Tuesday, December 4th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Tonight from 7-10pm, Brooklyn Brewery (79 N. 11th St., at Wythe Ave., Williamsburg) plays host to the New York City Brewers Guild’s Drink For Good: A Hurricane Sandy Fundraiser. The event will feature beer from over a dozen breweries, including Founders, Ommegang, Bronx Brewery, and, naturally, Brooklyn Brewery. They’ll also have food from Wafles and Dinges and Munchie Mobile. A $40 ticket gets you unlimited beer tastings and a commemorative tasting glass, and all proceeds go to benefit the Rockaway Surf Club, Red Hook Initiative, and Coney Recovers.

  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) celebrates beers of B. United Importers and BFM. $10 gets you six tastings of liquids like Glazen Toren Saison d'Erpe-Mere, Alvinne Melchior (a Belgian strong ale brewed with mustard seeds), and BFM Spike & Jerome.

  • The Diamond (43 Franklin St., at Calyer St., Greenpoint) hosts Ladies Night tonight at 7:30pm with Professor Fritz Briem. Enjoy the 1809 Berliner Weisse and the Grodziskie session beer from the small German brewer… and it’s $2 off for the ladies! That’s the classiest Ladies Night we’ve ever seen.

  • Head to Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge) as they tap two very rare brews tonight starting at 7pm: the Grassroots/Hill Farmstead Jackie O’s Autumn Saison, and the Hill Farmstead Foster Black Wheat IPA.

  • The subject of this week’s free Tuesday Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) is Pennsylvania’s Victory Brewing Company. Join RJ Ober of Victory to discuss the brewery’s history and guide you through a tasting of their fantastic beers. The tasting starts at 7pm.
