First Look at Houston Hall

image

Stop us if you’ve heard this one. A bar in a giant space with communal tables, booming ceilings, and a beer-centric menu. It must be a German beer hall, right? Not if it’s Houston Hall (222 W. Houston St., at Varick St., West Village), which has taken the beer hall model and made it uniquely American, with an East-meets-West food menu, enlightened cocktails, but most significantly, a lineup of exclusive beers brewed at Greenpoint Beer Works in Brooklyn.

Happy Hour: We’re not Feuillien anyone

It’s Monday, January 7th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Sierra Nevada Narwhal Imperial Stout. Get there at 5pm to enjoy this boozy beverage!

  • St. Feuillien pays a visit to Valhalla (815 9th Ave., at 54th St., Hell’s Kitchen) starting at 6pm. Enjoy some great beers from the Belgian brewer and chat with a brewery representative.

Your Beery Weekend: January 4-6

For a short week, it’s been quite busy. The Pony Bar raised its prices, Barcade leaked their new Manhattan location, The 508 got a new brewer, and we found out that come next year, Brooklyn Brewery is going to be brewing beer in Sweden. And that’s just the start of a long year.

Thankfully, for those of us looking for a respite, the beer scene will be a bit quieter this weekend, as we’re all still recovering from New Year’s holiday. And some of us - quite pointlessly - gave up alcohol for the month of January. But rather than give you a short list of events, we’ll suggest a few places where you can imbibe in some good beers this weekend.

It’s been a long time in the making (and these things always are), but now we’re starting to learn more about Barcade’s forthcoming Manhattan location. That’s because they’ll go before Community Board 4’s Business Licenses and Permits Committee next Tuesday night to present their proposal for a liquor license in a space in Chelsea on West 24th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue.

If you live in the neighborhood and love Barcade, the bar is asking you to show your support for the application at the hearing next week. The committee meets Tuesday at 6:30pm at the Intercontinental NY Times Square on the Ballroom Level.

If all goes well, we’ll be talking a lot more about Barcade New York (148 W. 24th St., at 7th Ave., Chelsea) really soon.
