It’s a big world outside the city limits of New York. And while it’s much easier to walk down the block to your local beer bar, there are some pretty great beer bars just outside of the city that are easily accessible by train, and offer you access to a lot of beer you just can’t find in the city. Here’s five such spots that might be worth a day trip on a lazy wintertime Saturday afternoon.
It’s Tuesday, January 15th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:
Tonight’s the night! It’s the Vanberg & DeWulf Coast to Coast Toast, a citywide toast of Belgian beer at venues across all five boroughs, starting at 5pm today and running all night long. We have the full list of spots celebrating, but among our favorites are:
The Ginger Man(11 E. 36th St., at 5th Ave., Midtown), who will have 28 (!) different Belgian brews on tap.
Jimmy’s No. 43(43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village), who makes Belgians the subject of its weekly $10 tasting tonight at 7:30pm.
4th Avenue Pub(76 4th Ave., at Bergen St., Boerum Hill) celebrates with the delightful Dupont Posta Rustica gruit on tap.
Bronx Ale House(216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge) pours four terrific Belgian beers and holds their official toast at 7pm.
That’s just scratching the surface. Again - check out all the details here and raise a glass tonight to Belgian beer!

Every year, Draft Magazine releases their list of the 100 best beer bars in the U.S. The 2013 list features six New York City bars (up from five last year), including a brand-new spot that just opened a year ago. Who made the list? Find out below.
It’s Monday, January 14th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:
It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House(281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Smuttynose Durty, an 8.4% ABV brown IPA. Get there at 5pm to enjoy this boozy, malty hop bomb!
Cisco Brewers pays a visit to Valhalla(815 9th Ave., at 54th St., Hell’s Kitchen) starting at 6pm. Enjoy some great beers on tap from the brewery on Nantucket. Meet the brewery rep and enjoy some live music, too!

Kirk Struble has a little bit of a craft beer bar empire going on these days. From the same man that brought you Washington Commons, Amsterdam Ale House, and Fourth Avenue Pub - among others - comes a beer bar that’ll please the once craft beer-starved Upper East Side. Third Avenue Ale House(1644 Third Ave., at 92nd St., Upper East Side) brings with it a wide range of craft beers and pub grub to a neighborhood that’s really starting to show up on the craft beer map.
Vanberg & DeWulf, the Cooperstown-based importers of Belgian beers like Hop Ruiter, Saison Dupont, and Castelain, holds their second annual national celebration of Belgian beer called the Coast to Coast Toast 2. Here in New York, it’s a little bit late. Across the nation, the toast was held on November 15th (King’s Day in Belgium), but because of Hurricane Sandy, the beer couldn’t get to all the participating locations here in the city, so Vanberg & DeWulf made a corporate donation to Team Rubicon, and pushed the New York celebration to January 15th.
So, this Tuesday night starting at 5:15pm, at dozens of locations across the city, they’ll be celebrating the Coast to Coast Toast again. Call it a river to river toast, perhaps. Or a borough to borough toast. Whatever you call it, it’s a good way to get your hands on some great Belgian (and what they call “honorary Belgian”) beer this Tuesday, even at some bars better known for their American beer selection.
