Happy Hour: C'mon, Get Hoppy

It’s Tuesday, January 22nd. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • As we mentioned earlier, the new Surge Protector Sandy Relief Ale will be on tap tonight at 61 Local (61 Bergen St., at Smith St., Carroll Gardens), The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen), Alewife (5-14 51st Ave., at 5th St., Long Island City), and Bronx Alehouse (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge). Bronx Alehouse will also serve the Ommegang Barrier Relief Belgian IPA on tap, along with other beers from Greenport Harbor, Blue Point, and Ommegang!

  • One Mile House (10 Delancey St., at Bowery, Lower East Side) hosts their First Annual IPA Fest starting tonight at 6pm. They’ll pour beers like the Stillwater As Follows, Evil Twin Femme Fatale, Ballast Point Sculpin, Firestone Walker Union Jack, and many more great IPAs, along with treats to pair with each one!

  • It’s Dogfish Head Night at The Owl Farm (297 9th St., at 5th Ave., Park Slope) starting at 6pm. They’ll pour ten brews from the famed brewery, including the Burton Baton, Immort Ale, Ta Henket, Chicory Stout, and more! Plus, they’ll be raffling off two vintage bottles of 2007 Raison D’Extra!

  • This week’s free Tuesday Night Tasting at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) features beers from Left Hand Brewing! Our pal Molly will be there to tell you about some great Colorado beer. The tasting kicks off at 7pm.

  • This week’s Ten Buck Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) raids Jimmy’s Cellar Reserves! $10 gets you six tastings of brews like DuPont Bio Foret, Vapeur d'Antan ‘96, and Maine Beer Company King Titus. Things get underway at 7:30pm.

  • Radegast Hall & Biergarten (113 N. 3rd St., at Berry St., Williamsburg) hosts a tasting of Belgian beers from Brouwerij Von Honsebrouck at 7pm, including the Kasteel Cuvee and Kasteel Donker. You can enjoy them in a flight or by the glass, and you’ll also get to partake in some live music from Brain Cloud.

The Beer Weekender: January 18-20

Have you ever travelled 3,300 miles to a beer festival? Well, we’re doing that right now. We’re headed to the Great Alaska Beer and Barleywine Festival this weekend, one of the most weirdly-located but talked-about beer festivals in the U.S. We are probably humble-bragging just by talking about it, but you’ll see plenty more documentation of this on Instagram and Twitter. And since we’ll be four hours behind, no worry that you’ll be sitting at work while we’re drinking. Promise, mmmkay?

Not heading to Alaska? You’re probably making a good decision. Here’s the lineup of craft beer events this weekend. Happy drinking!

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, January 17th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Troegs Night at The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) starts at 7pm. They’ll pour some pretty great brews, like the Scratch Series #78 Fresh Hop, Troegenator, the infamous Mad Elf!

  • Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) hosts the Brooklyn Launch Party for Bronx Brewery tonight starting at 6pm. Meet the guys behind the brewery, and try the Pale Ale and Black Pale Ale!

  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) is  Thornbridge Halcyon, a 7.4% ABV Imperial IPA with a well balanced bitterness, fruit flavors and intense hoppiness. Get there at 5pm to try it!

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) continues off their Pleasure Palace of Sours: A Festival of Wild Ales all night tonight. The event runs through this Sunday, featuring seven lines of sour beers each night. Among the beers that will be featured: local sours like KelSo Flemish Red and Carton Highlander Weisse, American sours like Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela and Allagash Confluence, and imported sour beers like Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge and Boon Kriek. Pucker up!

  • Join KelSo for a free tasting tonight at Malt & Mold (221 East Broadway, at Clinton St., Lower East Side) from 5-8pm. Same some beers like the Fuku and Industrial IPA, and enjoy some free cheese samples, too!

It’s Wednesday, January 16th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Sixpoint takes over the taps tonight at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village) in their eighth annual (!) event at the Tiger. On tap, they’ll have the Old Redhooker, Signal, three of the Spice of Life Series beers, Gorilla Warfare, and lots more all night long.

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) kicks off their Pleasure Palace of Sours: A Festival of Wild Ales tonight at 7pm. The event runs through this Sunday, featuring seven lines of sour beers each night. Among the beers that will be featured: local sours like KelSo Flemish Red and Carton Highlander Weisse, American sours like Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela and Allagash Confluence, and imported sour beers like Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge and Boon Kriek.   • The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay) hosts New Jersey’s Cricket Hill tonight at 6pm. They’ll have 11 draft lines dedicated to the brewery, plus Cricket Hill’s owner Rick Reid will be on hand to chat about his beers.

  • Enjoy a flight of Left Hand beers until 10pm tonight at Sycamore (1118 Cortelyou Rd., at Westminster Rd., Ditmas Park). They’ll be offering an $8 four-beer flight from the Colorado brewery, including the Chainsaw, Fade to Black Vol. 4, and Wake Up Dead Stout.

  • Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) hosts their Winterfest tonight starting at 6pm. They’ll have three winter ales on tap, plus a special cask of Southern Tier Choklat, and free brats from Wechsler’s at 7:30!

  • Sierra Nevada and Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) team up for the bar’s weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. From 7-10pm, $10 gets you 2 full beers, a 3-beer tasting flight, a taste of whisky, and an order of tater tots! You’ll get to taste the Narwhal Imperial Stout, Northern Hemisphere, Ruthless Rye, and more!

  • Luckydog (303 Bedford Ave., at S. 2nd St., Williamsburg) hosts a fundraiser for the baristas at Oslo Coffee across the street, which burned in a fire last week. From 7-10pm tonight, the bar will be donating 50% of their profits to the baristas who are out of work because of the fire.

Recovering from Sandy, Barrier comes roaring back

We’ve been closely following Barrier Brewing’s recovery as they bounce back from the damage they suffered in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. And we’ve got some good news: after ten weeks offline, the brewery is back up and running and brewing beer! But that’s not all: they’re also releasing their very first bottled beer, and two beers dedicated to Barrier’s recovery - one already out, and one releasing next week - are coming to a bar near you!
