Happy Hour: Super Bowl Hangover Edition

It’s Monday, February 4th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Allagash Grand Cru, the Maine brewer’s winter ale spiced with coriander, orange peel, and anise.

Where to watch the Super Bowl with Craft Beer

While neither of our two home teams are in this year’s big game, that’s obviously no excuse to watch with millions of others on Sunday night. We’ve got a rundown of which New York City beer bars are offering up specials for the Super Bowl.

Of course, another good option is to take some craft beer to a friend’s party and share it with the masses. And for a nice spin on the beer you bring, consider beers from San Francisco (Anchor, Speakeasy) and Baltimore (Heavy Seas, Stillwater). But if you do go out, here’s our rundown of where to go.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, January 31st. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) hosts Raphael, the brewer from Switzerland’s Trois Dames tonight from 5-7pm. They’ll also be pouring his beers, L'Amoureuse Rouge, L'Amoureuse Blanche, and the Grande Dame Oud Bruin!

  • It’s Smuttynose Night at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) tonight starting at 5pm. They’ll be pouring a dozen Smutty beers, including the Durty Brown IPA, Star Island Single, ParadoX Session IPA, and more!

  • The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) hosts Ballast Point and Greenport Harbor tonight starting at 7pm, pouring beers like the 2011 Black Marlin Porter and the Sculpin IPA from California, and Other Side IPA and the 2013 debut of Spring Turning Rye from Long Island!

  • Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St., at Broadway, Kingsbridge) pours six beers from Astoria’s Singlecut Beersmiths tonight at 7pm. Try the new Billy Full Stack IPA, Jan Olympic White Lagrrr, Dean PNW Mahogany Ale, and more!

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) holds their monthly IPA Night tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll throw on a nice tap list of a variety of IPAs that’ll make your tongue tickle from the hoppy goodness!

  • Brooklyn Brewery has a guided tasting lined up at Whole Foods UWS (808 Columbus Ave., at 97th St., Upper West Side) tonight until 8pm. Taste the Brooklyn Lager, Dry Irish Stout, Black Chocolate Stout, and Sorachi Ace!

Brooklyn Brew Shop goes commercial with creation of EST Brewing

We’ve been big fans of Stephen Valand and Erica Shea’s Brooklyn Brew Shop and their enthusiasm for craft beer and homebrewing. In fact, we purchased our very first homebrew kit from their booth at Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene back in 2009. Since that time, they’ve grown from a small booth to an international operation, selling their kits as far away as Norway and South Africa. Now, they’ll be brewing commercially for the first time this spring with the creation of Established Brewing Company - or EST Brewing Company for short.

Happy Hour: Sample Some Stouts

It’s Wednesday, January 30th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s Stout Sampling Night at The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay) tonight starting at 6pm. Sample Ballast Point Indra Kunindra, Two Brothers Northwind, Elysian Omen, Blue Mountain Barrel House Stout and more for free. They’ll also be passing out s'mores!

  • Sly Fox and Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) team up for the bar’s weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. Tonight from 7-10pm, $10 gets you 2 full beers, a 3-beer tasting flight, a taste of Templeton Rye, and an order of tater tots!

  • It’s Harpoon Night at Mudville 9 (126 Chambers St., at W. Broadway, Tribeca) tonight starting at 6pm. Enjoy some great brews from the Boston-based brewers!

Breweries selected for this year’s SAVOR

We’ve told you before that this year’s SAVOR, a beer-and-food-pairing festival thrown by the Brewers Association, will take place in New York this year. The event will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 14th and 15th, at the Metropolitan Pavilion and Altman Building (125 W. 18th St., at 6th Ave., Chelsea). Now, we’re learning more details about which breweries will be pouring at the event.
