Afternoon Timesuck: The Lost Episode of Brew Masters

We were a little bummed (albeit unsurprised) when the Discovery Channel show Brew Masters, which featured Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione, was cancelled during its first season. One episode of the show went unaired, and that episode has particular relevance to New York. A portion of the episode chronicled the planning of Birreria, the rooftop brewpub that Calagione collaborated on at Eataly.

The episode features Calagione along with Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich as they discuss plans for the brewery and the food menu back in 2010, complete with a tasting of ingredients planned for the beers brewed on the rooftop. He then travels to Italy to plot out Birreria’s beers (and their ingredients) with Leo di Vincenzo of Birra del Borgo and Teo Musso of Baladin and brew a test batch of what ultimately became Gina, the brewpub’s thyme-infused pale ale.

Now, that episode has been uploaded to YouTube for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

Before we get to this weekend’s beer events, we’ve got some good news for fans of Stone’s “Enjoy By” IPAs: the next beer in the series is coming to New York City! The Stone Enjoy By 04.01.13 IPA is being bottled and shipped next weekend, so you can expect to see it pop up in the five boroughs in the midst of New York City Beer Week. For the uninitiated, this beer is a big, floral, citrusy IPA that’s meant to be consumed in its freshest form. Stone takes it seriously by printing the “best by” date right on the label, and demanding that it be taken off store shelves after that date.

It’s a long weekend, so here’s four nights worth of beer events coming up in NYC…
