We’re jokingly referring to this week as “NYC Detox Week,” after ten days of non-stop beer events across the five boroughs. But five events really stood out for us over the course of the week. Some are once-in-a-lifetime events, some we really hope get repeated again at next year’s beer week, but all were truly memorable, whether for the beer or for the experience.
The end is here! It’s the final day of New York City Beer Week. After today, you might want to consider your own New York City Detox Week. But before that, enjoy these events today:
John Condzella started growing hops two years ago on his family farm in Wading River, in Suffolk County, Long Island. Since then, he’s built up a small following among local brewers who have used his Cascade and Mt. Hood hops. Captain Lawrence, Greenport Harbor, Great South Bay, and Blue Point are just a few of the breweries that fresh-hopped their beers with his hops last year after the harvest.
But there’s one big problem: those hops have to be picked by hand. And that takes a lot of manpower… 500 hours’ worth per acre, in fact. There’s a solution, though: a hop harvesting machine would cut that down to just 8 hours per acre. The machine would give Condzella Farms an opportunity to grow and produce more local hops for area breweries, and restore the hop-growing tradition that New York State had a century ago.
It’s the next-to-last day of NYC Beer Week! Had enough? We hope not, because this Saturday is chock full of great beer events. So, get out there and enjoy! Remember to choose your adventure wisely, and drink responsibly!
We’re into the home stretch! It’s the final three days of New York City Beer Week. But don’t fret: there’s a whole weekend of beer events ahead that’ll be guaranteed to wear you out by Sunday. First up, Friday! Check out our rundown of tonight’s events. Remember: choose wisely and drink responsibly (but not too responsibly… it’s Friday, after all)!
The third annual Beer for Beasts returns on Saturday, April 6th at The Bell House(149 7th St., at 3rd Ave., Gowanus). The annual event, put on by Sixpoint and Beer Advocate, is one of our favorite beer events of the year here in New York, and it’s for a great cause: all proceeds go to the Humane Society of New York. Tickets will go on sale today, Friday, March 1st, at 12 noon.
