The Beer Weekender: March 8-10

image

It’s worth noting one of the most significant beer events this weekend in New York isn’t an event, per se. It’s the opening of Tørst (615 Manhattan Ave., at Nassau Ave., Greenpoint), the new bar from Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø of Evil Twin Brewing, Jon Langley (formerly of DBGB), and former Momofuku chef Daniel Burns. The bar opened its doors officially this afternoon, but we got to check out a sneak preview earlier this week, and we can safely say it will blow beer geeks’ minds.

The beer lineup (21 taps in all, each with unique controls for temperature and carbonation) features nearly a dozen different beers from Evil Twin, plus a selection of rare imports and unique American craft beers. The bar is polished (and looks more like its pre-opening rendering than any other bar we’ve visited) and has a clean, Scandinavian kind of look to it. Quite simply, this place is going to make a big splash on the beer scene here, not just for its uniqueness, but for its appeal to beer tourists from around the world.

Look for a full write-up soon, once the madness dies down a little bit, but if you’re going this weekend, expect a crowd. And if it’s too much to handle, head to one of these beer events…

East Coast-West Coast Punk Rock Brew Tour kicks off this week

image

One of our favorite recurring beer events of the year, the East Coast vs. West Coast Punk Rock Brew Tour, kicks off this week. Each year, a number of “tour dates” hit popular beer bars with a lineup of beers from both coasts. This year, representing the East Coast will be Smuttynose, Bronx Brewery, Victory, and Sixpoint. From the West Coast: Lagunitas, Oskar Blues, Sierra Nevada, and Ballast Point. At eight stops around the five boroughs, these breweries will battle it out on the taps, served with a soundtrack of punk and hardcore. And it all kicks off this Friday with the pre-party at Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) and next Tuesday with the official kickoff at Alewife (5-14 51st Ave., at 5th St., Long Island City).
