Yankee Stadium “Craft Beer” stand is “Crafty”

image

A photo of a new beer stand at Yankee Stadium today has gone viral. Writer Amanda Rykoff posted this picture, which shows a new “Craft Beer Destination” stand that serves four options - Blue Moon Belgian White, Leinenkugel Summer Shandy, Crispin Cider, and Batch 19 Pre-Prohibition Lager, all of which are brands owned and brewed by beer giant MillerCoors.

This, coincidentally, came the same day as an AdWeek article explained how big brewers are hiding their “crafty” beers - meant to compete directly with small craft brewers - behind new brand and brewery names that intentionally mislead the consumer.

Pony Bar UES shifts strategy from craft to crap

image

Less than a year after opening, The Pony Bar UES (1444 First Ave. at 75th St., Upper East Side) announced that starting today, April 1st, they will be evolving their draft beer list to better fit the neighborhood’s tastes. While they’ll continue to serve 20 beers on tap, those beers will be primarily adjunct lagers brewed by Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors. “It was time to move in another direction,” Pony Bar owner Dan McLaughlin told us. “We were already selling a lot of Bud and Bud Light bottles at our Upper East Side location, so we figured, why not give the neighborhood what they want?”

Sixpoint’s Beer is Culture contest starts today

image

For the past three years, Brooklyn-based brewer Sixpoint has encouraged artists and design to let beer inspire them around the theme “Beer is Culture.” Kevin Romero created the winning poster last year, pictured above, but that’s just one of the many ways visualize how beer is a part of our lives, and how it is a cornerstone of civilization. So, for the fourth year, Sixpoint’s Beer is Culture Contest returns, accepting submissions between now and April 30th.

Homebrewed Bummer: Whole Foods Bowery Brewing Supply Department closing up shop

image

Manhattan’s only homebrew supply retailer is dying a slow death. Those who’ve been to the Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room (95 E. Houston St., at Chrystie St., Lower East Side) lately may have noticed their stock of homebrew supplies was dwindling, and that isn’t by mistake: the retailer confirmed last night that they are indeed phasing out the only place in Manhattan where one could stock up on bulk grain, hops, yeast, and equipment.

It was a nearly three-year experiment by the retailer, who never aggressively promoted the department. But the small, hard working set of shelves became a lifesaver for Manhattan homebrewers in need of a quick replacement or extra grain who didn’t have to trek across the East River to one of Brooklyn’s shops.

Thankfully, there’s an upside for those in need of supplies this weekend.

The Beer Weekender: March 29-31

image

The weekend is here at last, and it couldn’t come at a better time. The weather looks pretty decent, so perhaps you’d like to spend the day drinking outside. On Saturday, after you’ve spent time outside, come inside for the the NYC Craft Beer Festival “Spring Seasonals Edition.” Manhattan’s Lexington Armory (68 Lexington Ave., at 25th St., Rose Hill) will be invaded by beers from dozens of American craft breweries on Saturday, along with artisanal foods for purchase, live music, seminars, and some access to special brews.

Tickets are still available if you’re the kind of person who waits till the very last minute. General Admission tickets ($55) are still available for Session 2 (from 7-9:30pm), and a handful of VIP ($75) - which allow you an extra hour of drinking - and Connoisseur Tickets ($125) - with access to the Connoisseur Lounge with rare beers and complimentary hors d’oeuvres - are still available for both sessions. And if you really wait until the last minute, you can always get them at the door for ten bucks more.

Here’s a full rundown of the weekend’s beer events. Happy drinking!
