Happy Hour: Night of the Imperials

It’s Tuesday, April 16th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s Night of the Imperials tonight at 7pm at One Mile House (10 Delancey St., at Bowery, Lower East Side). They’ll be breaking out a ton of big, boozy beers, like the Evil Twin Yin and Yang, Left Hand Twin Sister, Great Divide Espresso Oak-Aged Yeti, Kuhnhenn Double Rice IPA, and many more! But please - pace yourself!

  • Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A, East Village) offers up some mighty fine beers from The Bruery tonight at 6:30pm. Try the Sour in the Rye, Hottenroth, Oude Tart, and more goodies they’ve been saving up for the event.

  • Celebrate the beers of California Sunswick 35/35 (35-02 35th St., at 35th Ave., Astoria) tonight starting at 7pm, as they host a tap lineup from Bear Republic (like the Racer 5 and Hop Rod Rye) and Mad River (like Bohemian Pilsner and Serious Madness).

  • This week’s Tuesday Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) features beers from San Diego brewers Green Flash! $20 gets you six tastings of beers like the Rayon Vert and Barleywine! Things get underway at 7:30pm.

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) features Spring Beers tonight at 7pm for their free Tuesday Tasting. Enjoy some beers just right for warm weather with your host, Bierkraft’s own Chris Balla.

The Beer Weekender: April 12-14

Say what you will about big beer, but they’re good at clever marketing. Whenever a new beer goes into cans, we can’t help but think of this never-aired, somewhat crass Bud Light Lime ad from a few years back.

Thankfully, there’s much better beer than Bud Light Lime in cans, and with Bronx Pale Ale in cans available for the first time this week, and tallboy cans of Sixpoint’s summertime Krystalweizen Apollo making their annual return, we can’t help but shout from the rooftops about how much we like getting it in the can. After all, in addition to being easier to transport and more commonly recycled, cans are better for beer itself - with 100% protection from light, there’s no chance of getting a skunky can of beer. And if you still think you get a metallic taste from cans, it’s all in your head - the coating on the cans keeps it from happening. And hey - if you still don’t like the thought of drinking from a can, just pour that sweet deliciousness into a cup, dummy!

This weekend’s beer events are listed below. Cheers!

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, April 11th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Today at 4pm, Green Flash’s weekend tour of New York kicks off with a 15-tap takeover at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg). Meet brewmaster Chuck Silva, co-founders Mike & Lisa Hinkley and the rest of the Green Flash gang from San Diego as they hit town.  The night will feature one of only two kegs of Flanders Drive Sour Red Ale ever served in the city, along with rare beers like the Serrano Chili Double Stout, Bourbon Barrel Aged Silva Stout, and Triple IPA Green Bullet on tap, plus a cask of the Palate Wrecker.

  • Lagunitas takes over the taps at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm.  They’ll be pouring beers like the Undercover Shutdown, Wilco Tango Foxtrot (WTF?), Fusion 16 Session IPA, and lots more Californian goodies.

  • The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) hosts Bear Republic tonight at 7pm. They’ll have eight lines of rare brews from the Nor-Cal brewer, like Cafe Racer XV, the 2011 Ryevalry, and the 2011 Cuvee de Bubba.
  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) features a different special keg or cask every week. This week, they’ll tap a firkin of Ridgeway Bad King John, a 6% ABV traditional English stout today at 5pm.

  • Top Hops Beer Shop (94 Orchard St., at Broome St., Lower East Side) hosts Samuel Smith - not just the brewery, but the man himself - for an event today starting at 4pm. They’ll be pouring the Oatmeal Stout, Nut Brown Ale, Organic Chocolate Stout, and more on tap.

  • Join Empire for a free tasting tonight at Malt & Mold (221 East Broadway, at Clinton St., Lower East Side) from 5-8pm. Enjoy some tastes of beer from the Upstate New York brewery, including the beloved White Aphro and more, plus sample some free cheese, too.

  • The Pony Bar (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen) hosts Long Trail tonight starting at 6pm, with twenty draft lines from the parent brand and Otter Creek, Wolaver’s, and The Shed. Long Trail brewer Dave Hartman will be on hand for the occasion while they pour the Long Trail Bavarian Smoked Brown, Otter Creek Hop Session, Wolaver’s Wildflower Wheat, and many more.

  • It’s the annual Dogfish Head Springfest tonight at 6pm at Standings (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village). They’ll have the Aprihop and four other DFH brews on tap along with - naturally - free pizza at 8pm.

  • Beer Authority (300 W. 40th St., at 8th Ave., Hell’s Kitchen) hosts Belhaven as part of their Scottish Night tonight at 6pm, with the Twisted Thistle, Wee Heavy, Black, and more on tap, plus samples of Bowmore whisky.
