The Beer Weekender: April 19-21

Usually, I start this weekly feature with some sort of quip or cheerful beer news, but let’s drop the formalities this week and just say this: it’s been a hell of week. And if you don’t feel like you really need a drink after the week that’s been going on, you’re a stronger man than I am. And while you do it, raise your glass to those we lost this week in Boston and West.

Schlafly beers coming to New York this May

For decades, New York has been exposed to beer from St. Louis. Of course, most of it has been in the form of St. Louis-based Anheuser Busch’s adjunct beers. Perennial came to New York last year, but we’ve been smacking our lips waiting for Schlafly, a long-time St. Louis craft brewer. But we won’t have to wait much longer: their beers will arrive in New York beginning May 15th!

Growler Station now serving pints on premises

There’s a new place to grab a pint in Greenwich Village. It’s not a new place (they’ve been open for over a year), but it is a new place to saddle up to a bar and have a beer. The Growler Station (26 W. 8th St., at MacDougal St., Greenwich Village) started selling pints earlier this month. And if the draught options don’t suit your liking, they also offer up their bottles for consumption on site, too.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

This year’s East Coast-West Coast Punk Rock Brew Tour wraps up tonight in Brooklyn.

It’s Thursday, April 18th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Barcade Jersey City (163 Newark Ave., at Erie St., Jersey City) celebrates its second anniversary tonight at 5pm. They’ll have lots of good stuff and rarities, like the Allagash James Bean, Epic Brainless on Raspberries, the 2011 Troegs Mad Elf, and many more. They’ll also have swag giveaways and oysters.

  • Flying Dog takes over the taps at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm.  They’ll be pouring beers like the St. EADman Belgian Dark Ale, Gonzo Imperial Porter, Single Hop Centennial Imperial IPA, and more, including two casks.

  • Bar Matchless (557 Manhattan Ave., at Driggs Ave., Greenpoint) hosts the finale of the East Coast-West Coast Punk Rock Brew Tourtonight at 7pm, with a lineup of bands in the back room and beer from Smuttynose, Lagunitas, Bronx Brewery, Oskar Blues, and more.

  • Dive 75 (101 W. 75th St., at Columbus Ave., Upper West Side) celebrates the beers of Stone tonight at 7pm. They’ll have six beers on tap from the brewery, including a little taste of the new stuff that just arrived in town!

  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) is the delectable Peekskill Eastern Standard IPA, in a firkin, no less! Get there at 5pm to try it.

  • Goose Island pays a visit to New York Beer Company (321 W. 44th St., at 8th Ave., Midtown West) tonight at 5pm, pouring beers like the IPA, Matilda, and Summertime on tap, plus bottles of the Sofie and Bourbon County Stout.

  • Stinky Bklyn (261 Smith St., at Baltic St., Cobble Hill) hosts a free tasting with Singlecut tonight from 5-8pm, with a beer and cheese pairing that features their Jan Olympic White Lagrrr!

Happy Hour: It’s a birthday party, and you’re invited

It’s Wednesday, April 17th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • The annual Lovullopalooza at at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village) kicks off today at 3pm. It’s a birthday celebration for Union Beer employee Mike Lovullo, but you’re invited as they pull out all the stops on some great kegs, like Cantillon Vignerone, Allagash Midnight Brett, Maine Beer Co. Lunch, and many more favorites and rarities!

  • The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) hosts New Jersey’s own Carton Brewing tonight at 6pm. They’ll pour the famous Boat Beer, Carton Canyon, #tresBK, and more!

  • Celebrate the release of this year’s Stone Espresso Imperial Russian Stout tonight at 5pm at Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill). Try this caffeinated new take on their annual release, plus other Stone brews as well!

  • Celebrate the New York City rollout of Pyramid tonight at 7pm at Dive Bar (732 Amsterdam Ave., at 96th St., Upper West Side). Enjoy the Apricot Ale, Hefeweizen, Curveball, and Outburst IPA from the Seattle-based brand for the first time in Manhattan!

  • City Swiggers (320 E. 86th St., at 2nd Ave., Upper East Side) hosts a lineup of beers from Twelve Percent Imports tonight starting at 6pm. Stop in and try something from their broad portfolio of imported beers (and some not-so-imported beers that are equally as good).

  • Long Island’s Greenport Harbor Brewing and Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village), team up for the bar’s weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. The tasting is sold out, but you can get $4 pints of the Harbor Ale, Spring Turning Rye Saison, and Maibock from 5-9pm tonight!

  • For Grand Central commuters, Michael Jordan’s The Steakhouse NYC (23 Vanderbilt Ave., at Grand Central Terminal, Midtown) hosts the first in their series of weekly “Made in America” Beer Tastings today from 5:30-6:30pm. This week, sample the Ballast Point Sculpin IPA.

  • Enjoy Speakeasy beers until 10pm tonight at Sycamore (1118 Cortelyou Rd., at Westminster Rd., Ditmas Park). They’ll be offering an $8 four-beer flight from the prohibition-themed San Francisco-based brewery.
