Check out these vintage subway beer ads at the Transit Museum

We went to the New York Transit Museum over the weekend. You’d think this has very little to do with beer, but beer advertising has always been commonplace on the subway (aside from, you know, those few years of prohibition). The subway cars on display at the museum carry period-specific advertising, so naturally, beer ads are part of the hundreds of ads.

These days on the subway, we’re overwhelmed with ads from Budweiser more than any other brewer. But back in the 1950s and 1960s, subways displayed ads for the breweries of yore, like Pennsylvania’s Yuengling, Rochester’s Genessee, Brooklyn-based brewery Rheingold, and Guinness, which was brewed in Long Island City, Queens from 1943 to 1954. Happy Hour: Thirsty Tuesday

It’s Tuesday, April 30th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Hudson Common (356 W. 58th St., at 9th Ave., Hell’s Kitchen) hosts their inaugural beer even, the Burger & Beer Bash with Sixpoint tonight at 7pm. They’ll have burger and beer pairings like the Brownstone with their “Hot Dago Burger” and Bengali Tiger with a California Burger, plus your chance for your first Apollo of the summer season.

  • The Pony Bar UES (1444 First Ave. at 75th St., Upper East Side) hosts Allagash tonight starting at 6pm, with 17 lines of goodness from Maine, like the FV13, Bourbon Black, and Hugh Malone.

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) features Newburgh tonight at 7pm for their free Tuesday Tasting. Check out what this Hudson Valley brewery is all about, with their Paper Box Pale Ale, Brown Ale, Chile Lime Stout, and others while you hear from the folks behind the beer.

  • Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A, East Village) offers up the beers of Avery tonight at 6:30pm. Enjoy the Maharaja IPA, Reverend Quad, Salvation Belgian Strong Ale, and more.

  • It’s Ballast Point Night starting at 4pm at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown). They’ll pour the Even Keel, Pescadero Pilsner, the Sculpin IPA, and lots of rarities and surprises.

  • This week’s Tuesday Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) features beers from Jimmy’s cellar reserve! $20 gets you beers like the Yeastie Boys Rex Attitude, Bruery Rugbrod, and more. Things get underway at 7:30pm.

  • Radegast Hall (113 N. 3rd St., at Berry St., Williamsburg) celebrates Queen’s Day with a lineup of Dutch beers tonight starting at 7pm. Try the Urthel Saisonniere, La Trappe Isid’or, and Tilburg’s Brown Ale, and enjoy live music from the JC Hopkins Combo.

  • The Brazen Head (228 Atlantic Ave., at Court St., Cobble Hill) hosts Louisiana’s Bayou Teche tonight from 6-8pm. They’ll have $4 pints of their LA 31 Pale Ale, Passionné Passion Fruit Wheat, and more.

Happy Hour: April Sours

It’s Monday, April 29th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Victory CBC Mandarina Bitter, a session brew with experimental German hops brewed exclusively for the Craft Brewers Conference.

  • Beer Table Pantry (Grand Central Terminal, Graybar Passage, Midtown) hosts a free sampling of beer from Allagash tonight from 5-7pm. Stop in on your way to the train for some Blonde, then get yourself a growler to take home.

  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) hosts their April Sours beer dinner tonight at 7pm, with a five-course dinner from chef Patti Jackson paired with sour beers like Hanssens Gueuze and Alvinne Cuvee Freddy. A few tickets are still available for $45, call 212-982-3006 to reserve.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, April 25th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • “The Battle of the Batches” is tonight from 7-9pm at Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village). We’ll be on hand with Radiant Pig as they roll out two versions of their flagship beer, Junior IPA. Since beer is always evolving, their second batch of the brew is a bit different from the first batch. We’ll discuss the differences, let you taste both, and choose your favorite. $10 gets you eight ounces of each batch, and then a full pint of your favorite.

  • It’s Midwest Beer Night at Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) tonight starting at 5pm. They’ll have some biguns on tonight, like the Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout, a 2008 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, Perennial Black Walnut Dunkel, and many more.

  • It’s DOOMSDAY at The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) tonight, as Founders takes over the taps starting at 7pm. They’ll tap the 2011 Imperial Stout at 7pm, 2011 Kentucky Breakfast Stout at 8pm, and the DOOM (their new Bourbon barrel-aged Imperial IPA) at 9pm. They’ll also have seven other Founders brews on tap.
  • It’s the monthly IPA Night at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope), with tons of IPAs on tap starting at 7pm. Among them, the Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin IPA, Barrier Money IPA, Maine Lunch IPA, and the Stone Enjoy By 5.17.13!

  • Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg) hosts Wandering Star tonight at 7pm. Have some tasty brews from Massachusetts and enjoy the tunes of DJ Jim “Bocky” Barnes!

  • Flying Dog and Left Hand take over the taps at Buddha Beer Bar (4497 Broadway, at 192nd St., Washington Heights) tonight from 6-10pm. Enjoy a little of both coasts tonight, with the Flying Dog Single Hop El Dorado, Left Hand Week Sauce Porter, and lots more.

  • Spuyten Duyvil (350 Metropolitan Ave., at Havermeyer St., Williamsburg) hosts Dieu du Ciel! tonight at 5pm. Enjoy the Morality IPA, Péché Mortel 11th Anniversary coffee stout, Revenante smoked porter, and other brews from the Quebecois brewery.

  • Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave., at Franklin St., Greenpoint) hosts Victory tonight at 6pm. They’ll pour some classics like the Headwaters Pale Ale and Hop Wallop Double IPA, and some rarities, like the Mandarina Best Bitter and Melon Session Ale brewed for the Craft Brewers Conference.

  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) is the Westbrook Weisse Weisse Baby, a cleverly-named Berlinerweisse from South Carolina! Get there at 5pm to try it.
