It’s Monday, May 6th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • New spot Over The Eight (594 Union Ave., at Richardson St., Williamsburg) hosts its first beer event tonight at 7:30. It’s “East Coast Rarities,” with four unusual brews on tap: the Flying Dog Pumpernickel IPA, Element ES Oak, Pretty Things Baby Tree, and a cask of Greenport Harbor Otherside IPA dry-hopped with Amarillo & Chinook hops. You can get a flight of all four for just $15.

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s The Bruery Five Golden Rings, a golden ale in The Bruery’s 12 Days of Christmas Series that can be enjoyed any time of the year.

  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) hosts their Hitachino, Sake and Beer Prix Fixe Dinner with guest chef Cathy Erway tonight at 7pm, with a five-course dinner paired with Japanese beers and sakes. The Beer Weekender: May 3-5

There’s a question that’s been asked quietly among beer geeks around New York this week: why hasn’t SAVOR sold out yet? SAVOR, the Brewer’s Association annual food-and-beer pairing event, is being held in New York this year for the first time, on June 14th and 15th at the Metropolitan Pavilion and Altman Building (125 W. 18th St., at 6th Ave., Chelsea). Tickets went on sale over two weeks ago, and have yet to sell out. This may not seem like a big deal, but the previous two iterations of the festival in Washington, DC, sold out in a matter of hours. Perhaps it’s the higher price point, as SAVOR’s ticket prices are up 59% compared to just two years ago. Or maybe it’s the fact that it’s in New York that’s scaring away the typical attendee. If that’s the case, take advantage of this situation… tickets are still available on Ticketmaster, as are tickets to many of the special food-and-beer salons that take place over the course of the festival.

Meanwhile, let’s delve into this weekend’s rundown of beer events.

Off the Beer Grid: Why your favorite brewery isn’t available in New York

image
Sorry, folks. You can search up and down the island of Manhattan to find beers from these brewers, but you won’t find them.

It happens on a daily basis to beer store and bar owners all over New York. The questions that, to the industry insider, have an obvious answer. But to those unaccustomed to how the beer industry functions, the questions are fast and furious and almost always net a disappointing response.

Every day, their customers ask:
- Do you guys have Pliny the Elder?
- Do you have Fat Tire on tap?
- Do you carry Bell’s Two-Hearted?
- When is your store getting a shipment of Three Floyds?
- Where in the city can I get Surly Darkness?

The answers to those questions are: no, no, no, never, and nowhere.
