Sandy Relief Beer raised $58,000 for storm victims

You might remember back in January, when eight Long Island breweries collaborated on a beer to help put Long Island back on its feet after its coast was ravaged by Hurricane Sandy. The beer, an IPA brewed together with Blind Bat, Blue Point, Great South Bay, Greenport Harbor, Long Ireland, Port Jeff, Spider Bite, and Barrier, was brewed to raise funds for Long Island Cares and to support Barrier, whose brewery was destroyed in the storm. Four months later, the numbers are in, and the beer was a resounding success.

Happy Hour: Feels like Seattle, Drink like Seattle

It’s Wednesday, May 8th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • The Pacific Northwest Beer and Oyster Fest at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village) kicks off today at open and runs through tomorrow. They’ll have beers from Anchorage, Alaska’s Midnight Sun, Newport, Oregon’s Rogue, and Seattle’s Elysian (including their new Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale Ale), plus a spread of oysters fresh from Oregon’s Yaquina Bay.

  • Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill) hosts Dogfish Head tonight at 6pm. They’ll have ten “off-centered” brews on tap, including the 90 Minute IPA, Burton Baton, Chateau Jiahu, Aprihop, plus some rarities in bottles.

  • City Swiggers (320 E. 86th St., at 2nd Ave., Upper East Side) hosts a tasting from Avery tonight starting at 6pm. Enjoy a few brews from this beloved Colorado brewery.

  • Flying Dog and Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village), team up for the bar’s weekly $10 Bourbon and Beer Tasting Series. Tonight from 7-9pm, $10 gets beers in a 3-beer tasting flight, 2 full pours, a taste of whisky, and an order of tater tots.

Craft beer spreads to new neighborhoods in the boroughs

Four new beer bars are kicking off a craft beer renaissance in New York neighborhoods that haven’t exactly been known for their good taste in brew. Even a decade ago, there were only a handful of bars in Manhattan and nearby Brooklyn that catered to craft beer drinkers’ desires. But now, from the Bronx to South Brooklyn, people are catching on to craft beer, and thanks in part to these four new places, it’s more accessible than ever.

Happy Hour: Roll out the Mega Barrel

It’s Tuesday, May 7th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s Mega Barrel Night all night long tonight at One Mile House (10 Delancey St., at Bowery, Lower East Side). They’ll be breaking out a ton of barrel-aged beers tonight, including Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout, Firestone Walker Parabola, Harvistoun Ola Dubh 21-year, Goose Island Bourbon County Coffee Stout, and tons more. Most beers will be up when they open at 3pm, and some special tappings begin at 8pm.

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) introduces their 11th Anniversary Ale tonight, brewed with the folks from Barrier. It’s a smoked Berliner Weisse, and they’re be pouring it along with four other brews from the Oceanside-based brewery for their free Tuesday Tasting tonight at 7pm.

  • This week’s Tuesday Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) features beers from Japan’s Hitachino! $20 gets you beers like the White, Nipponia, Espresso Stout, and more. Things get underway at 7:30pm.

  • Radegast Hall (113 N. 3rd St., at Berry St., Williamsburg) celebrates Maibocks in their Tuesday Tasting tonight starting at 7pm. Since it’s that time of year, try a flight of Maibocks from Einbecker, Hacker- Pschorr, and Hofbrau while you enjoy live music from Franziske Brucker.

  • It’s Netherlands Beer Night starting at 4pm at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown). They’ll pour Dutch beers like Tilburg Dutch Brown, Urthel Hop-it, La Trappe Quadrupel, and more. They’ll also have giveaways like t-shirts and glasses.
