Happy Hour: Dog Gone Good Beer

It’s Tuesday, May 14th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Schlafly celebrates their New York launch tonight at The Pony Bar HK (637 10th Ave. at 45th St., Hell’s Kitchen) at 7pm with seven beers on tap: the American IPADry-Hopped APA, Kolsch, Oatmeal Stout, Pale Ale, Session IPA, and Summer Lager. Co-founders Tom Schlafly and Dan Kopman will be on hand, too.

  • The Pony Bar UES (1444 First Ave. at 75th St., Upper East Side) hosts Flying Dog and their CEO Jim Caruso tonight starting at 6pm, with 17 lines of goodness from the Maryland brewery - 20 taps and two casks in all - like the Kujo Imperial Coffee Stout, Lucky SOB, Chipotle Dark Ale, and Green Tea Imperial Stout.

  • It’s Firestone Walker Night starting at 4pm at Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown). They’ll pour the Wookey Jack, Walker’s Reserve Porer, the much sought-after Parabola, and more!

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) features French beers tonight at 7pm for their free Tuesday Tasting. Jim “Bocky” Barnes will update you on the French beer scene, offer up five French brews from Shelton Brothers Importers for tasting, and then spin some French disco for your enjoyment.

  • Good Beer (422 E. 9th St., btw. 1st Ave. and Ave. A, East Village) offers up the beers of Great Divide tonight at 6:30pm. Enjoy the Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout, Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout, the new Heyday, and more.

  • This week’s Tuesday Tasting at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) features beers from Sixpoint! $20 gets you beers like the 3 Beans, Spice of Life Citra, Mad Scientists #13 Gruit, and more. Things get underway at 7:30pm.

Happy Hour: That Other Brewery from St. Louis

It’s Monday, May 6th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Celebrate the New York launch of Schlafly tonight at The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace) with seven beers on tap: the American IPA, Dry-Hopped APA, Kolsch, Oatmeal Stout, Pale Ale, Session IPA, and Summer Lager. In addition, Schlafly co-founder Dan Kopman will be in attendance. Things will get underway at 7pm.

  • Beer Table Pantry (Grand Central Terminal, Graybar Passage, Midtown) hosts a free sampling of beer from Flying Dog tonight from 5-7pm. Stop in on your way to the train and say hello to the brewery’s CEO, Jim Caruso, then get yourself a growler to take home.

  • You don’t have to go out to Long Island to celebrate Long Island Beer Week - let it come to you at Shorty’s (576 9th Ave., at 42nd St., Hell’s Kitchen), where they’ll host Spider Bite and four beers starting at 6pm.

  • Brickyard Gastropub (785 9th Ave., at 52nd St., Hell’s Kitchen) hosts a Sierra Nevada tap takeover tonight starting at 5pm. Grab $5 pours of the Hoptimum, Torpedo, Kellerweis, and more!

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s Maine Beer Co. Mean Old Tom, a rich chocolate stout aged on vanilla beans.

  • Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) hosts a beer dinner with Mosefund Mangalista Farms and Sixpoint tonight at 7pm, with a five-course pig-filled dinner paired with five different beers. A few tickets are still available online for $45, or call 212-982-3006 to reserve.

The Beer Weekender: May 10-12

Fans of German brew in Midtown rejoice! Reichenbach Hall (5 W. 37th St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) has officially opened for business. This big, booming beer hall is the new venture from the folks who ran the now-closed David Copperfield’s on the Upper East Side, and it’s a German beer lover’s dream. The beer list is all-German here, from Weihenstephaner and Warsteiner to Spaten and Hofbrau, with 14 taps in all (many appropriately served in steins). The food is just what you’d expect from a German beer hall - pretzels, sausage, and other hearty traditional eats. They’re still in their soft opening this week, but it’s worth popping in, especially tonight after a long work week.

Tickets still available for Beer Balls this weekend

Somehow, we are going to make it through this update without making a childish joke, but given the name of this beer-and-food event - and its somewhat suggestive logo depicted above - it’s going to be hard to keep a straight face with the word “balls” flying around so much. Regardless, Get Real Presents is back again with their second annual celebration of meatballs and beer called Beer Balls this Saturday, and tickets are still available.

Happy Hour: Thirsty Thursday

It’s Thursday, May 9th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Our monthly Clues & Brews Trivia Night is tonight at 7:30pm at Breukelen Bier Merchants (182 Grand St., at Driggs Ave., Williamsburg). Enjoy some craft beer, answer some trivia questions, and win more beer! Winners of each trivia round get beer on the house, and the overall winners get a gift card. They’ll have beers like Ballast Point Navigator, Goose Island Minx, the Pyramid Outburst IPA, and more on tap.

  • Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) celebrates Brooklyn Brewery’s 25th anniversary tonight! Starting at 4pm, they’ll be pouring 15 different drafts from the nearby brewery, including some vintages like a 2010 Monster Ale and 2011 Black Chocolate Stout.

  • It’s Stone Night at The Gate (321 5th Ave., at 3rd St., Park Slope) tonight starting at 7pm. They’ll pour some great brews from the California brewer, including the Enjoy By 5.17.13 IPA, 2012 Double Bastard, the Espresso Imperial Russian Stout, and lots more.

  • The Pacific Northwest Beer and Oyster Fest at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village) wraps up tonight. They’ll have beers from Anchorage, Alaska’s Midnight Sun, Newport, Oregon’s Rogue, and Seattle’s Elysian (including their new Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale Ale), plus a spread of oysters fresh from Oregon’s Yaquina Bay.
  • Smuttynose takes over the taps at Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) tonight at 7pm.  They’ll be pouring a huge lineup of New Hampshire brews, include the Noonan Black IPA, Zinneke Belgian Stout, Really Old Brown Dog, and a cask of Star Island Single, dry-hopped with experimental 01210 hops..

  • The Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) is the Blue Mountain Barrel Aged Dirty Belgian. It’s a Belgian Dark Ale brewed with yeast from Unibroue and aged in Wild Turkey barrels. Get there at 5pm to try it!

  • The Staten Island launch of Pyramid kicks off tonight at Adobe Blues (63 Lafayette Ave., at Fillmore St., New Brighton). They’ll be pouring the Apricot Weizen, Curveball Blonde Ale, and Outburst IPA for your pleasure, straight outta Seattle.
