Here we go. SAVOR is here and kicks off tonight at 7:30 at Metropolitan Pavilion and Altman Building (125 W. 18th St., at 6th Ave., Chelsea). There’s lots of food and drink to be had at the event, held tonight and tomorrow night, and there are still some tickets available if you’ve procrastinated for two months since they went on sale.
Thankfully, though, even if you’re not going to SAVOR, there is tons to do this weekend. After all, lots of beer geeks are in town, and the bars and visiting brewers want to show off their best.
Good news for beer-loving commuters who pass through Grand Central: Beer Table Pantry(Grand Central Terminal, Graybar Passage, Midtown) is now offering a new size of growler: pint size.
The “Pints to Go” are available starting now, for $3, which includes the jar, lid, and a koozie. Then, you can fill it with 16 ounces of your choice of any of their draft beers for $4 to $7 and enjoy it on the train ride home.
Sure beats a giant can of Coors Light from the vendor on the tracks.
Beer Table Pantry is located directly across from Track 13 in the passage just off Lexington and 43rd.

This week, New York’s beer scene is in the national spotlight. There’s a huge influx of people from beer industry and beer geeks in general coming to New York this week for SAVOR, and we’d like to be among the first to welcome them.
Now, there are a lot of preconceived notions about New York’s beer scene. Mainly, there’s the suggestion that we don’t have one. Some people will say we’re not a beer town; we’re a wine and cocktail town. That’s simply not true. Yes, we were slow to get our beer scene to pick up steam, but many of the new openings over the past two years here have been beer bars. We’re on track to double the number of breweries in the five boroughs again this year (we did it last year, too).
Sure, there’s a lot of money here, and in the moneyed or touristy neighborhoods, you’ll find a lot of wine and cocktail being served. But get out of Midtown and go to Williamsburg, Park Slope, the East Village, or even the Upper West Side and you’ll find a heck of a lot more beer than wine being served. New York is a wildly diverse city, and to say in one fell swoop that we’re “not a beer town” inaccurately suggests that you can place one label on a city of eight million people and hundreds of different neighborhoods. The beer scene in New York is alive and well, even if it’s not right under your nose when you step out of a hotel in Times Square.
Trust us, we have a lot to offer. So, if you’re new to New York or don’t come here often, here’s a guide to our beers, SAVOR Week, and our beer scene.
With little fanfare, a few glitches, and a lot of riding (over 550,000 miles so far, to be precise), Citi Bike launched in Manhattan and Brooklyn to the general public last week. The bike share program gives riders 30 minutes (or 45 if you sign up for a $95 annual membership) to travel between any two of the hundreds of stations in the system. Because bikes and beer seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly, we see a big advantage to Citi Bike: you can ride to a bar, have a few beers, and not have to worry about having to ride home on the bike you rode there.
Another advantage: it “shrinks” the city. A bar that was once a 10-minute walk from the subway is now a 4-minute Citi Bike ride away. There are a few hidden gems out there that are a bit of a walk from public transit. So we’ve come up with a list of a few beer bars worth checking out that are a little off the subway’s beaten path, but are just steps away from a Citi Bike station.
