It’s Good Beer Month!

New York’s Good Beer Month kicks off today! Each year, July is a month to embrace craft beer culture and all the things that make beer great in New York. There’s been a proclamation from the mayor, so this thing is no arbitrary celebration.

There will be beer events throughout July to celebrate Good Beer Month, including three at WNYC’s Greene Space as part of their “Craft Beer Jam.” It all kicks off tonight with parties and deals to celebrate the release of the Craft Beer Passport, and continues straight through until July 31st. Here’s a full rundown of the month’s events, with more to be announced soon:

The Beer Weekender: June 28-30

A new beer from Brooklyn Brewery hit the scene last week in a most unusual place: the Union Square Greenmarket. The Greenmarket Wheat is the first beer from the brewery to take advantage of New York’s new farm-brewery law, which allows beer produced with a share of New York State ingredients to be sold at farmers’ markets. The beer uses raw wheat from North Country Farm in Watertown, Pilsner Barley Malt from Valley Malt in Hadley, Massachusetts, and Wildflower Honey from Tremblay Apiaries in Chemung County. The beer is bottled-conditioned in a bottle with a label designed by the famed Milton Glazer, who also created the Brooklyn Brewery logo. The beer is sold at the Union Square Greenmarket on Wednesdays and Saturdays for $10 a bottle.

Now that you’ve got a stop in Union Square scheduled for Saturday, here’s your beer event rundown for the rest of the weekend.

Kick off Good Beer Month with the Get Real Craft Beer Passport

image

Monday marks the first day of July, and that means it’s also the first day of Good Beer Month! Under proclamation of the mayor, the month will celebrate craft beer and feature a bunch of special beer events in New York City. The month also puts the spotlight on the Good Beer Seal bars, a group of 41 bars chosen by a panel of beer experts that specialize in craft beer (full disclosure: the editor of Brew York is on this panel).

The folks at Get Real, along with the New York State Brewers Assocation, are celebrating Good Beer Month with the Craft Beer Passport. The $30 passport entitles you to a free pint of beer at 39 different bars in all five boroughs between July 1st and Labor Day, September 2nd. That’s, like, 77 cents a glass if you make it to all 39. These bars all proudly pour New York State beer as well, so you can keep it local with brews from spots like Shmaltz, Barrier, Brooklyn, Empire, and more.
