First Look at Beer Culture

image

Hell’s Kitchen seems to be coming into its own as a craft beer hotbed. From Pony Bar to Valhalla to Alfie’s to Brickyard Gastropub to New York Beer Company, there’s a huge variety of places to saddle up and drink a pint. But what was lacking until last week was the bar-beer shop hybrid that’s become a trend in the city lately. A new 30-seat ground-level spot on a residential block, Beer Culture (324 W. 45th St., btw. 8th & 9th Ave., Hell’s Kitchen), fills that neighborhood void. The shop and bar offers a worthy new option for folks West of Midtown to pick up some bottles or scope out their next favorite draft beer.

Get Real Beer Week set for September

image

The hard-working folks at Get Real Presents are lining up a week full of beer events September 20th-27th that they’re dubbing Get Real Beer Week. Among them: an attempt to break the world record for the “World’s Largest Tap Takeover,” a beer-and-burlesque event with aphrodisiac foods, and the finale of the national “Lamb Jam Tour,” featuring lamb dishes paired with beers and wines. These events will kick off a week of tap takeovers, beer tastings, beer dinners, and other special events that they’re planning around the city.

Here’s the details on the first three, announced last night:

First Look at Flatiron Hall

image

If you like Houston Hall, the downtown beer hall from the same team behind Heartland Brewery, then you’ll probably like its new sibling further uptown, Flatiron Hall (38 W. 26th St., at 6th Ave., Flatiron). Then again, if you don’t like Houston Hall, Flatiron Hall, with its more toned-down, upscale vibe, might be more your pace. The new spot merely tinkers with the successful model downtown that opened earlier this year, with innovative pub food, custom beers brewed at Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Beer Works, and fancy Victorian-era touches like flatiron fixtures worth gawking at.

Happy Hour: Case of the Mondays

It’s Monday, July 29th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s Allagash Night tonight from 6-8pm at Valhalla (815 9th Ave., at 54th St., Hell’s Kitchen). Head toward the Hudson to get your hands on some beers from Maine, from the sour to the sweet.

  • Beer Table Pantry (Grand Central Terminal, Graybar Passage, Midtown) hosts a free guided tasting of beer from 21st Amendment tonight from 5-7pm. Stop in on your way to the train for a tasting of beer, and take a growler (or pint-to-go) home.

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Freigeist Sauer Porter, a - you guessed it - sour porter from Stolberg, Germany.
