The Beer Weekender: August 2-4

image

We know you’re probably here to plan this weekend, but let’s talk about next weekend for a second. Living in Greenpoint and Long Island City has sucked on weekends recently, on account of G Train construction that’s shut it down for 12 weekends this year. To get between the neighborhoods, you either have to take a shuttle bus or walk. Next Saturday, August 10th, Sixpoint and Get Real Presents are offering another option: crawl. A discounted $30 ticket on their Sixpoint Beer & Food Crawl will get you an 8-ounce pour of beer at 11 locations on both sides of the Pulaski Bridge. Plus, they’ll have a $3 small plate at each stop with food, giving you the energy to carry on. The crawl starts at your choice of location - either Brooklyn Label (180 Franklin St., at Java St., Greenpoint) or Alewife (5-14 51st Ave., at 5th St., Long Island City), runs from 1-7pm, and there will be a 28-line Sixpoint Tap Takeover at Alewife afterward.

Meanwhile, back to this weekend. If you’re not camping out with thousands of your closest beer geek friends Upstate at the sold-out Belgium Comes to Cooperstown, here’s our rundown of beer events in the city this weekend…

It’s Thursday, August 1st. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Our friend and longtime New York homebrewer Jonathan Moxey comes to Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) from his current gig brewing at St. Louis' Perennial Artisan Ales today starting at 4pm. The tape takeover will feature a whopping 17 beers, including Homefront IPA, brewed with oranges and aged on Louisville Slugger baseball bats, and Rose Nylund, a a 100% Brettanomyces-fermented Belgian Witbier from their series of beers brewed in honor of The Golden Girls. Thank you, Jonathan, for being a friend.

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) hosts Michigan’s Kuhnhenn with a tap takeover tonight at 7pm. On tap, they’ll have the Conundrum English Bitter, Iron Monger Dunkel, Bourbon Barrel Barley Wine, and more.

  • Stinky Bklyn (261 Smith St., at Baltic St., Cobble Hill) hosts Brooklyn Brewery for a Ghost Bottle Night at 7:30pm. Join Garrett Oliver and the crew as you taste rare bottles of beers like Wild 1, their KriekCuvee Elijah, and more. Snacks will be provided, too.

  • The weekly Thursday Tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 E. 7th St., at 2nd Ave., East Village) this week celebrates IPA Day. It’s the Bear Republic Crazy Ivan, a Belgian-style IPA from California, which they’ll tap at 5pm.

  • Heading home through Grand Central? Fill up on IPAs as Beer Table Pantry (Grand Central Terminal, Graybar Passage, Midtown) puts six of their favorite IPAs on tap all day long for growler fills (and pints-to-go), including the Evil Twin Yang, Ithaca Flower Power, and Peekskill Eastern Standard.

  • Whole Foods Upper West Side (808 Columbus Ave., at 97th St., Upper West Side) hosts a Left Hand and Flying Dog tasting today from 4-7pm. Stop by and taste East Coast and Rocky Mountain brews with Molly!

  • Alewife (5-14 51st Ave., at 5th St., Long Island City) celebrates IPA Day by featuring IPAs on tap, in bottles, and in cans starting at 4pm. Among the drafts they’ll serve up: Two Brothers Heavy Handed IPA, Avery Brewing Maharaja, Green Flash Palate Wrecker, and more!

  • Is there anything better than a free IPA? Wear a Hawaiian shirt and get free Founders All Day IPA from 10-10:30pm tonight at Isa (348 Wythe Ave., at S. 2nd St., Williamsburg) as part of their Founders-sponsored Tropical Contact party.

  • The next-best thing to free beer might be $4 Ballast Point Sculpin. That’s what John Brown Smokehouse (10-43 44th Dr., at 11th St., Long Island City) is offering up tonight from 5-7pm.

Winners of the Good Beer Seal and committee members pose with Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy’s No. 43 and the city’s proclamation of July Good Beer Month

In a ceremony last night at 82 Mercer, the Good Beer Seal committee announced ten new bars as inductees. These bars will now proudly display the Good Beer Seal, which certifies bars that don’t just merely offer craft beer, but celebrate it. In addition to adding several bars in the five boroughs, the committee chose five bars outside of the city - in nearby New Jersey and on Long Island - that were also worthy of the seal.

Seasonal Creep continues to rear its ugly, pumpkiny head

image
Plenty of more seasonally-appropriate beer could’ve filled this space.

It’s the last day of July, and the fall seasonal beers are already hitting beer shop shelves. In fact, some of them have been sitting on shelves for over two weeks now. “Seasonal creep” in the beer industry, as we’ve noted before, is getting out of control. Brewers continue to push up their timelines so they can be first to market with their top-selling seasonal beers. Remember when Sam Adams tweeted a picture of a bottle of their Summer Ale in the snow back in March? Not surprisingly, their Oktoberfest hit market the same week we suffered from an oppressive string of 90+-degree days. Bottled-on dates on the first batch of Southern Tier Pumking to hit New York City were in early July, meaning they started brewing their fall seasonal in June.
