We’re in the midst of the dog days of summer, so now is a good time to give you a roundup of the newest beer-drinking spots in the city that we’d added to our Brew York Beer Guide.

In a ceremony last week in Williamsburg, the Good Beer Seal announced 23 new bars as inductees – including 21 in New York City. These bars will now proudly display the Good Beer Seal, which certifies bars that don’t just merely offer craft beer, but celebrate it. In addition to adding 21 bars in the five boroughs, two bars outside of the city – in Chicago and Vestal in Upstate New York – that were also worthy of the seal.
For its second year, the biggest celebration of women in craft beer returns to Brooklyn on Saturday, August 10th. Beers With(out) Beards will be held at The Well in Williamsbug starting at noon, and will feature breweries that are women-owned and beers that are women-brewed. The festival is presented by Hop Culture in collaboration with Yakima Chief Hops.

New York City’s only homebrew supply store, Bitter & Esters in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, won the American Homebrewers Association Homebrew Shop of the Year Award at this weekend’s Homebrew Con in Providence, Rhode Island.
Queens’ ICONYC Brewing Company has opened a new production brewery and taproom in Long Island City after three years in a smaller facility on Northern Boulevard. The ICONYC Brewery and Biergarten adds to Long Island City’s booming beer scene, and offers a rare opportunity to drink beer outdoors at a brewery in the city.
Mugs Alehouse, a 27-year mainstay of New York’s craft beer scene, will close its doors for good this month, with its last day in business slated for Saturday, June 22nd. Saying the bar had “run its course,” owner Ed Berestecki held the closing over from the beginning of the month to allow longtime patrons to say their proper goodbyes. So I, personally, would like to say a proper goodbye as well.
