But for hopheads, there’s always room for more West Coast beer, so they’ll be delighted to know that Coronado Brewing Company launches in New York this month.

It’s Monday, August 12th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • Barcade (388 Union Ave., at Ainslie St., Williamsburg) celebrates the latest in their exclusive Sixpoint re-release series: the Black Soul Porter will be on nitro tonight at 7pm. • Beer Table Pantry (Grand Central Terminal, Graybar Passage, Midtown) hosts a free tasting of beer from Colorado’s Left Hand tonight from 5-7pm. Stop in on your way to the train for a tasting of beer, and take a growler (or pint-to-go) home.

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Crooked Stave St. Bretta Summer, a 100% brettanomyces witbier brewed with blood oranges.

The Beer Weekender: August 9-11

image

Are these two labels too close for comfort? Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso seems to think so. He’s quoted in an article by Jim Galligan about Anheuser-Busch’s Wild Red and Blue Dawg, which have suspiciously similar typefaces and imagery in their labels. Caruso suggests that customers complain to him about the similarity at least twice a week - and in some cases, he’s found A-B reps getting placements of their beers right next to his - purposely causing confusion. Obviously, Big Beer will deny, deny, deny - and Caruso has little chance of winning a legal battle against the behemoth.

This is another reminder: if you care about where your beer comes from and who’s brewing it, you need to be a smart beer consumer now more than ever. If you see a new brand at a store and you’re unsure about its origins, don’t be afraid to look it up. Dig deep; “brewed by Blue Dawg Brewing, Baldwinsville, NY” doesn’t sound like big beer, until you realize Anheuser-Busch has a brewing facility there. As we’ve noted before, Big Beer is going out of its way to hide its affiliation with their faux-craft brands, knowing that it would hurt their sales if craft beer drinkers knew who was behind it. Buyer beware.

And finally, we’ll leave you with gem of a quote from an Anheuser-Busch spokesman in Galligan’s article:

“If a consumer is surprised to learn that the beer they’re enjoying is brewed by Anheuser-Busch, it should be a happy discovery.”

Excuse us while we hold back laughter over the thought of a craft beer drinker saying, “this is brewed by Anheuser-Busch? That’s great!”

Now, onto this weekend’s rundown of beer events:

Beercation: Portland, Maine

image

Because the world exists beyond the Hudson River, Beercation is our occasional travel series where we feature the best beer spots in destinations beyond New York.

The Portland in Oregon - which was actually named after the one in Maine - seems to get all the attention when it comes to beer. But the New England namesake of the Pacific Northwest beer haven is just as deserving of recognition for its beer scene. From its nationally-known breweries to its respected craft-focused bars to its up-and-coming nanobreweries, Maine takes its beer scene seriously. And while you could go for lobster and lighthouses, a Beercation in Maine is just as worthwhile. And nobody’s stopping you from having a lobster roll with your beer.
