Happy Hour: The End (of Summer) is Near!

It’s Wednesday, August 28th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • House of Brews (302 W. 51st St., at 8th Ave., Hell’s Kitchen) hosts an End of Summer Brewers’ Bash tonight starting at 5:30pm. Enjoy brews from KelSo, Bronx Brewery, Sixpoint, Brooklyn Brewery, Empire, and more on tap, plus raffles, giveaways, samples and more.

  • Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., West Village) hosts Sierra Nevada to usher in the end of summer today starting at 3pm. On tap, the Tumbler, Flipside Red IPA, Narwhal Imperial Stout, three beers from their Beer Camp series, and two firkins from one of America’s first craft breweries.

  • Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B, at 2nd St., East Village) goes Can Crazy with their Summer of Cans Part 4: Bride of Canny Party tonight from 6-10pm. Enjoy $4 craft beer cans, like Sixpoint Apollo, Narragansett Summer Ale, and lots more… or pay $22 in advance or $25 at the door for all-you-can-drink cans till 10pm.

  • Saranac takes the taps tonight at Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill). Starting at 6pm, enjoy a selection of draft beers from the Utica-based brewer and celebrate their 125th anniversary.

From the Cellar: Where to Drink Vintage Beer in NYC

There’s plenty of reasons to drink beer fresh. For one, its flavors and aromas are at precisely the point where brewers intended for you to enjoy them. Sunlight and oxygen can damage beer over time, leaving it a shadow of its former self. But more potent beers do age well when cellared in proper conditions. It’s part of the reason why many Imperial Stouts and Barleywines include a year of vintage on the label - so you can stash them away in a climate-controlled cellar.

Here in New York, space is at a premium, so not every beer enthusiast can just mosey on down to their cellar to stash a beer away to enjoy later. Thankfully, there are a few spots in New York that cellar vintage beers and will break them out when they’re ready for your enjoyment.   • Michigan’s Kuhnhenn takes the taps Rattle-N-Hum (14 E. 33rd St., at 5th Ave., Midtown) today starting at 4pm. Enjoy brews like the Export Stout, Wit, and Braggot all night long.

  • Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope) features Brauhaus Riegele tonight at 7pm for their free Tuesday Tasting. Join Ian Murray of Raven Imports as he guides you through beers from this Bavarian brewery that just started pouring in New York this month… get there early for a seat!

  • Bar Catalonia (206 W. 41st St., at 7th Ave., Midtown) continues their series of Sixpoint Live Sessions, featuring local musicians and their beer. The Markham Group, a jazz ensemble, will perform as you enjoy The Crisp.

Happy Hour: Savor the Flavor of Flavor Savor

It’s Monday, August 26th. Here’s our list of recommended beer-related events in and around New York after work tonight:

  • It’s VSK (Very Special Keg) Monday at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker St., at Jones St., Greenwich Village). At 5pm, they’ll tap a rare or unique keg of the bar’s choosing. This week, it’s the Peekskill Flavor Savor, a collaboration farmhouse ale brewed with Crossroads and Stillwater that spent a little time in Peekskill’s coolship.

  • Bourbon Street Queens (40-12 Bell Blvd., at 40th Ave., Bayside) hosts Queens Brewery with $4 pints of their Lager and a pint glass to take home tonight from 7-9pm.
