The Beer Weekender: September 27-29

The hop harvest has wrapped up this year, and in New York, it’s been one of the biggest harvests in generations. New York’s hop industry is bouncing back from years of near-dormancy, thanks to a booming craft beer scene and Governor Cuomo’s Farm Brewery Bill, which grants specific benefits to brewers who use New York-grown products in their beer. This documentary, Hopped Upstate, documents a year in the life of one hop grower and the people behind the increase in demand of local hops in New York. WAKE Multimedia’s Leslie Von Pless created this 15-minute film, which ends in Saranac’s annual hop harvest for their Wet Hop IPA. In the end, you reap the benefits in the form of fresher, more flavorful beer!

As we head into the second weekend of Oktoberfest, there’s much to enjoy… here’s our rundown of this weekend’s beer events:

Other Half Brewing’s Sam Richardson cleans kegs in his soon-to-open space in Gowanus (photo via Instagram)

If the number of breweries that have already opened in New York in the past couple of years wasn’t argument enough that the city’s beer scene is booming, there’s a pretty long list of breweries in the hopper. Some are agonizingly close to opening, some are many, many months off, but we figured we’d run down some of the breweries in the planning or construction stages right now.
