Fall has been a busy season for beer bar openings in New York. Heck, just since we’ve visited these new spots, even more have entered their soft opening (you can see which bars are coming soon in our recent preview). Here are three recent beer bar openings in the five boroughs worth checking out.
A group of bars in the East Village and on the Lower East Side have teamed up with Union Beer Distributors and Colorado brewers Left Hand, Oskar Blues, Breckenridge, and Great Divide to raise money for Colorado Flood relief. Starting Tuesday and running through Saturday, November 2nd, these Colorado brewers will be on tap at select bars, and Union Beer will continue to donate $3.50 per keg to flood relief efforts. And these bars have also donated prizes for a charitable raffle happening at the end of the two weeks.
Rattle tickets are just $10, with all proceeds going to the Left Hand Brewing Foundation, which is helping to support those effected by the floods that decimated many parts of the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies last month, including cutting off Oskar Blues’ hometown of Lyons. Prizes include gift certificates, bar tabs, and food from participating bars. You can see a list of participating bars here, as well as the prizes they’re offering in the raffle.
Yesterday, Kansas City-based Boulevard Brewingannounced they would be purchased by Belgium outfit Duvel Moortgat, owners of Cooperstown’s Brewery Ommegang and several lines of Belgian beers. Yes, a foreign company is buying the nation’s 12th-largest craft brewer.
We told you last month about New York City’s breweries in planning - eight places that should all be operating by early next year. There’s another one to add to the list now: Braven Brewing. Today, the Brooklyn-based outfit launched a Kickstarter campaign. Their plan is to begin brewing two beers (a Black IPA and Wheat IPA, both canned) off-site while constructing Bushwick’s first brewery in decades - a neighborhood that was a brewing hotbed in the pre-prohibition era. They’re looking to raise $20,000 by November 20th.
Meanwhile, up in Maine, a former Sixpoint brewer is very close to swinging the doors open on his new venture. Ian McConnell is in the midst of a Kickstarter for his new Banded Horn Brewing in Biddeford, looking to raise funds to build out a tasting room in a historic mill town between Portland and Kittery. If you’re feeling extra generous, and you’re someone who regularly visits Maine, they’re also looking to raise $20,000 by early November.
With the money you have left to spare, you can enjoy some of the events on our rundown for the weekend. Happy drinking!

It’s that time of the year again. The NYC Craft Beer Festival is making its seasonal return for their “Winter Harvest” on Saturday and Sunday, November 23rd and 24th at Manhattan’s Lexington Armory (68 Lexington Ave., at 25th St., Rose Hill). In three sessions, the Armory will be invaded by beers from dozens of American craft breweries, along with artisanal foods for purchase, live music, seminars, and some access to special brews. The festival will also include a Sunday session for the first time in the series’ history.
