The Beer Weekender: November 22-24

Lucky number 13.

The next brick-and-mortar brewery to open in New York City will be the 13th operating brewery in the five boroughs. After today’s opening on the Lower East Side, there will be 12 breweries in New York. For those who don’t want to count yourself, those 12 are Chelsea, Birreria at Eataly, 508 Gastrobrewery, and Paulaner Brauhaus in Manhattan, Singlecut, Rockaway, Bridge and Tunnel, Big Alice, and Beyond Kombucha in Queens, and Brooklyn, Sixpoint, and Greenpoint Beer Works (who brews for Heartland and KelSo) in Brooklyn.

So who’s number 13? It’ll most likely be Other Half Brewing out of Brooklyn, who debuted their first beer (brewed off-site at Peekskill) last night. But at least three others are very much in active construction mode: Queens’ Finback Brewery, Greenpoint’s Grain Terminal at Dirck the Norseman, and Bronx’s Gun Hill Brewing. And several others, as we noted back in September, are also in the works.

Regardless of who’s next, we’re just glad the number keeps increasing, and there’s more local beer to enjoy today than at any point in New York City since Schaefer closed their Brooklyn brewery in 1976.

Now, our rundown of this weekend’s beer events, which include the NYC Craft Beer Festival Winter Harvest, a Pints for Prostates fundraiser at Jimmy’s No. 43, and some banjo and beer! It’s all on our calendar

In the late 19th and early 20th century, New York City was peppered with dozens of German-style breweries and biergartens. German immigrants continued the traditions they learned at home, with many settling in the Lower East Side. Little would settlers know that the culture of those days would die out in the temperance movement and prohibition, only to return over a century later in the form of a brewpub operated by a Munich-based brewery. Manhattan’s Paulaner Brauhaus NYC (265 Bowery, at Houston St., Lower East Side) may be part of a worldwide enterprise and global chainlet, but it’s also right at home in a city that once prided itself on its German brewing tradition.
